Herbert Ortman Obituary

Dr. Herbert "Herb" Ortman

Dr. Herbert "Herb" Ortman, 97, of Canistota passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Home in Canistota. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 16 at the United Church of Canistota.

Herbert Ortman was born on November 2, 1916 to Amon and Minnie (Tarrell) Ortman in Marion, SD. After attending Canistota Public School and National College of Chiropractic, he graduated in 1938 with a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Naturopathic Degree. Dr. Ortman practiced at the Ortman Clinic until retiring in 1986. Under his guidance the clinic became the largest "family" chiropractic practice in the U.S., with 16 family members practicing since Dr. Amon began treating patients in 1915.

Dr. Ortman has also operated several other businesses, including a 13,000 acre cattle ranch, a 1500 cattle feed lot, a Conoco gas station and a Kaiser-Frazer auto dealership. Dr. Ortman has served as a Representative to the South Dakota Legislature, Mayor of Canistota and on multiple state and national Chiropractic organizations. He was also inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Dr. Ortman is most respected for his wisdom and soft spoken guidance in various local, civic, city and church organizations.

Some things that Herb especially enjoyed were fishing and eating walleye, hunting, dining with friends, big band music, traveling, gardening, reading, playing cards, real life and real people stories, listening to Paul Harvey, flying his own plane and giving rides, Cadillacs, clean garages, moccasins, a good recliner, a good sermon, and dunking Oreos and chocolate chip cookies.

Herb is survived by: three sons, Wayne (Sally) of Canistota, Don (Cherie) of Hartford, and Doug (LeAnn) of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Pamela (Gary) Pletan of Sturgis; one brothers, Erv (Arleen) Ortman of Sioux Falls; one sister, Irene Weiland of Sioux Falls; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ida, one son, Terry, one grandson, Scott, and two brothers, Clarence and Lester. www.kinzleyfh.com

Doug, Don, Pam, Wayne and Sally,

I just heard about Herb. My deepest condolences for your loss. I just loved Herb's dry sense of humor. He and my Mom were still sending the same musical birthday card back and forth when he died.

I have so many wonderful memories of childhood being with your family. I always felt special when I was with you guys.

Doug - thank you again for taking care of my Mom when she broke her arm in California. She broke her femur bone last December, and she is walking again (be it with a walker) at the age of 96! She was also born in 1916.

I love your family.

All the best to you all,
Susan Westre

My deepest sympathy to all of you.... your dad was a very special man to so many, including me.... I remember many fun times at your house Pam, staying overnight with you and trying to escape ALL of those brothers... your dad was truly a "gentle"man and I feel your loss also.
