David George Wartman, age 94, died Thursday September 21, 2023 at the OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rockford, Illinois. He was born on May 24, 1929 in Paynesville, Minnesota, son of Katherine (Henneman) and George Wartman. He first lived in Watkins, Minnesota. When he was 6, his family moved to Ashland Wisconsin. His father bought a Funeral Home there which he operated as the Wartman Funeral Home. He graduated from DePadua High School in 1947 and was that year's recipient of the Metternich award for his athletic and scholastic achievements. In 1951 he graduated from Marquette University and in 1954 he graduated from The University of Wisconsin Madison Law School.
After Law School, he entered the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, serving in Japan and Korea. In 1958 he moved back to Ashland and married the love of his life, Carol Erickson. Together they had five children. Upon returning to Ashland he joined his brother Richard Wartman practicing law in Ashland as Wartman and Wartman, Attorneys-at-Law.
In retirement he and Carol enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. He especially enjoyed golfing in Arizona and at the Ashland golf course.
In the last two years he appreciated the care he and Carol received at the Morning Star Assisted Living in Rockford, Illinois and the loving care of his daughter Connie Nelson, who he nicknamed "Doc".
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland, The Ashland Elks Club, and the Ashland Kiwanis Club.
David is survived by (4) children, Michael Wartman of Ashland, Timothy Wartman (Brenda) of Shaumburg, IL, John Wartman (Sheryl) of Franklin, Connie (Jeff) Nelson of Rockford, IL; (9) grandchildren, David Wartman (Sara}, Charlene Wartman, Kayla Wartman, Brooke Wartman, Brett Witkowski, Kristyn Wartman, Katy Wartman, Joseph Nelson, and Katherine Karsonovich (Torin); (2) great grandchildren, Juniper Wartman and Grace Wartman; (10) nieces, Mary Erickson, Mary Kay Thoma, Ann Jacobson, Beth Enck, Katy Wartman, Sue Greenberg, Ann Forrer, Beth Hagstrom, Mary Carvelhi, Jane Freeman; ((5) nephews, Mark Erickson, Paul Wartman, Richard Wartman, Robert Stewart, and David Stewart; brother, Lew Wartman; sister, Marie (Richard) Stewart; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol, his sister Mary; his brother, Richard, his son Robert, his sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Erickson, Polly Wartman and Mary Jo Wartman; and by many friends.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday October 7th at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland, WI.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at the church that morning starting at 10:00 am until the hour of the service. Interment will follow at the St. Agnes Cemetery in Ashland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School in David's honor.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Mellen and Ashland, WI.
