Dear Brient Family,
I had Dr. B. for physics in the mid-1970s at Ohio University. I must say that I truly enjoyed his class, his style of teaching and how well he was able to take complex concepts and present them in the simplest way. He was also one of the best mentors I ever had. He gave me direction when I most needed it. I was also a music student at Ohio University and became familiar with the Aeolian Skinner pipe organ at the Church of the Good Sheperd. I remember Dr. B. singing in that choir and performing a bass solo there on occasion. He was truly a man for all seasons.

My dad was a gentle, kind, joyful, and unassuming man who favored listening over talking. A true tinkerer, he could fix just about anything. He always had his volt meter and micrometer close at hand, not to mention all his shop tools. He was a mechanical engineer and a physicist who, at one time, worked as an electrician and ran an auto repair shop (Charlie’s Garage). But his quintessential occupation was at the nuclear accelerator lab here in Athens. That’s why he brought his family from Texas to Ohio: The university built one of the first nuclear accelerators in the United States in the 60’s, and cutting edge research was taking place there to find the fundamental particles and properties of the universe. Wow! My dad was only excitable for a few things: his wife & kids, apple pie (any pie), singing, and fundamental particles! The Accelerator Lab was his second home and tinkerer’s paradise for almost 40 years!
Always a fixture in the church choirs (First Presbyterian, Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd), he later joined the Singing Men of Ohio (Ohio University), accompanied by his own pianist wife Harolyn. He also toured with the Morris Beachy Singers (University of Texas) to Europe, England, and Ireland, also with Harolyn by his side. I suppose if there was a touring pie connoisseurs group, he would have joined that as well.
Everyone he touched was changed forever, whether they knew it or not. I couldn’t ask for a better dad. Here’s to you, dad! I will miss you.
All my love and deepest respect,
your son Thaden
