Ellery Golos Obituary

ATHENS - Ellery Bernard Golos died peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 12, 2019. Son to Ida and Phil Golos, Ellery was born in Elmira, New York, on Sept. 27, 1926. He married Lila Golos on March 20, 1965, and they spent 40 years in Athens, Ohio, before moving to Minnesota.
Ellery enlisted in the Navy Air Force at age 17 and served in WWII until 1945. In college, he had a passion for mathematics and philosophy, earning a master's degree in each. Upon graduation, he was hired at Ohio University where he worked as a math professor for 40 years. In 1970, he submitted a proposal that became the Honors Tutorial College, and served as dean until 1977. He also wrote two math texts: Patterns in Mathematics and Foundations of Euclidian and Non-Euclidian Geometry.
In 1983, Ellery was named honorary alumnus of Ohio University and the Ellery Golos Lecture Series was created in 2012 in his honor. He formed close bonds with his students and colleagues and many sent stories and memories to be shared for his 92nd birthday celebration.
Mid-life he began painting, and was encouraged by his close friend and well-known Athens artist Murray Stern to develop his skill. Over the past 50 years, Ellery painted more than 100 paintings which can be found in homes of family and friends across the country.
Ellery cherished his time at his cabin in the north woods of Minnesota where he spent each summer with family and friends for 55 years. He was well loved and known for his wit, his banter and his home-made pizza.
Ellery was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Golos; his parents; siblings, Abe, Natalie and Frances Golos; and son-in-law.
He is survived by his daughters, Pam Golos, and Debbie Golos Schmitz; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A private memorial service will be held in Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 20.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in name to The Ohio University Foundation, designated for either the Ellery Golos Lecture Fund or for the Honors Tutorial College Endowed Scholarship Fund, and mailed along with a note in memory of Ellery Golos to P.O. Box 869, Athens, OH 45701, or online at www.ohio.edu/give.

Although we weren't actually related, Ellery and Lila became aunt and uncle to me. They shared their home, their family, and their hearts with everyone they met. I will always remember Ellery as he perched his glasses on his nose and looked around the seder table, opening the Hagaddah to begin and welcoming all of us with his smile, his wit, and his strong sense of tradition. He was a true educator: teaching by example, patience, and compassion. My sense of Judaism is largely informed by his influence and I think of him especially during Passover. Sending love and hugs to Pam, Debbie, and his extended family.

Ellery stayed at my house in California with Aunt Lila when I was around l2 years old. They were fairly newly married and seemed very happy together. Aunt Lila said that Ellery reminded her of her dear brother, Irv in many ways, including looks. My father and Ellery did have many similarities. He was a wonderful professor, writer, father, husband and friend. I wish I could have known him better but I lived in California and he and Aunt Lila were in Ohio. I heard many wonderful stories about "The Cabin" and how beautiful it was. To Pam and Debbie, Susie (my sister,) and I send you prayers for healing from the grief you are feeling today. We lost our father, Irving, almost one year ago and each day we miss him more. I am sure you feel the same way, losing your dearest father and not too long ago your mother. Please send me your addresses. I would like to send a card and make a donation in your father's name. Love, Barbara Gunther and Susan Parks , Irving's daughters.

I will forever be grateful to Ellery for the role he played in establishing the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University. The educational experiences he was instrumental in creating left an indelible mark on me. Thank you, Mr. Golos.
