Linda Maher Obituary

ATHENS - Linda Gayle (Mayer) Maher, 65, of Athens, Ohio passed away Sunday, March 15, 2020. She was born July 21, 1954 in Athens. Linda was a kind, empathetic, and gentle soul with an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. She was an encouraging wife; an understanding, patient mother; a devoted daughter; a supportive sister; a loving aunt and grandmother; and a loyal friend. Linda had a profound impact on the lives of many children and families as a childcare provider.
She was a founding member and former treasurer of the Athens Catholic Community Food Pantry. Linda was an avid photographer, like her father, and a member of Athens County Knitters. She visited all 50 states and several European countries. Other notable interests included reading, cooking, movies, musicals, plays, and almost all things Disney. She loved all colors as long as they were blue. Linda had an uncanny knack for remembering birthdays and important dates to the delight of her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Grace (Pugh) Mayer; grandparents, John and Mabel Pugh; special aunt and uncle, Marjorie (Pugh) Watson and Gregor Watson; and in-laws, Raymond and Janice Maher.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert L. Maher of Athens; father, Robert E. Mayer of Warsaw, Indiana; sister, Vicki (Joel) Casarrubias of Round Lake, Illinois; children, Matthew Maher of Beavercreek, Ohio, Rory (Kelsie) Maher of Corvallis, Oregon, Marilyn Maher of Athens; three grandchildren; and several loving cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.
A funeral Mass and memorial service will be scheduled in late May as conditions permit. Arrangements will be announced by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association Central and Southern Ohio Chapter, Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio, and the Athens Catholic Community Food Pantry. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register book at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.

When I think of Linda, I immediately think of family. Linda clearly loved being a member of family groups, loved our Disney family reunions, and loved family visiting Athens and her house of blue (and Disney). At least from my perspective, the in-law part of sister in-law never applied to either Linda or my wife Mary. Linda was a sister in the Maher family, as is Mary. Because of that reality, there will be a big empty space at our family gatherings no ambitious road map for days at Disney; family game time will simply not be the same.
Since there is no doubt that Lindas physical ordeal during the last few months propelled her straight to heaven, I pray that Linda watches over all our family, especially Bob, Marilyn, Matthew, Rory, and Kelsie. May her love for family inspire all of us to stay close and cherish our time together.

Linda was my beautiful, loving, thoughtful, and generous sister-in-law. She sent cards for birthdays and anniversaries on time to everyone. Her special had-made gifts were made with love and thoughtfulness. She had energy galore, always planning the next vacation, the next family reunion, and coordinated fast passes for a number of us at the Disney Parks, a no small feat for such a large number of people. I remember the night she persuaded me to stand in line two hours until midnight just to get the thrill of riding the great Disney Avatar adventure. The two hour wait was worth it! It was thrilling. I have not been able to secure a ride on Avitar since that summer night three years ago. In my mind, Linda will always be associated with that ride. Phone call conversations with Linda were special. She was a marvelous listener. Her gentle words calmed the soul. her love of family was outstanding. She loved us all and was interested in the happenings in our lives. She loved when we visited her home in Athens, Ohio. A real welcome awaited us with food galore to feed the hungry travelers. Her spirituality was evident in the many ways she served her parish community. She was a spiritual woman who gave God first priority in her life. Her love for Bob, her cherished husband, was an inspiration in fidelity and partnership. Marilyn, Rory, and Matthew were the object of her tender devotion and caring. She was proud of each child. Musicals, stage plays, trivial pursuit, movies, museums, world famous attractions, and all things that lifted the human spirit were life-giving to her. Marilyn and Linda were soul mates when it came to entertainment. It is still unreal and difficult to accept her death. God willing, we will reunite in eternity when every tear will be wiped away and only joy in our resurrected state will last throughout eternity.

Aunt Linda was a wonderful Aunt. She always knew how to make positive out of a negative situation. She always knew how to make me feel good especially when I was feeling down. She never forgot my birthday. I will always remember when she would bring the board games and card games to family reunions. She was especially great at the board game trivial pursuit. I will miss you always but I know that you are free from pain. I know that you are in a better place now with your mother, Grandma Jan, and Bob-o. I know I have another guardian angel watching over me.

Paulo Coelho said "Important encounters are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other." I am so thankful that "planned" meeting occurred on 10/31/1972. Many years of love and friendship.

My love to her and her family. She was a born planner and I am certain she has resumed.

I will think of her often as she was a very special person I had the privilege for 47 years to say was my friend.

Love Craig B.

Bob and family , we are so sorry for your loss. One of the things I remeber about Linda is that she was the only cousin that got Grandma Pugh's red hair. I used to hope one of my children would have the red hair, now it's my grandchildren I wait for to see if they will have the red hair. I loved her hair. Linda was always so welcoming and friendly to me and my family. Saying she will be very missed doesn't begin to cover it. Prayers & blessings
