Benjamin AMOSS Obituary

AMOSS, Sr., Benjamin Benjamin McRae Amoss Sr. was born in 1936 on September 25 (also the date of his father's birthday, his parents' wedding anniversary, and his older brother's birthday) and died June 26, 2016 from congestive heart failure and associated problems. The third child of John Wyatt Amoss and Mary Smith Amoss, Dr. Amoss devoted his life to the three things he valued most: family, work, and church. Dr. Amoss, an Eagle Scout, was a 1958 graduate of the Southern College of Pharmacy and operated Amoss Pharmacy in Fairburn, first in partnership with his father and then with his late brother-in-law, Roy Edward Tucker. A lifelong resident of Fairburn, he was a member of the First Baptist Church and a director of the Fairburn Banking Company until its acquisition by United Community Banks. Inspired by his daughter Paula, Dr. Amoss helped found ASC (Advocates for Special Citizens), which still provides activities for special citizens in South Fulton He also served as a director of the organization now known as enAble, which manages group homes and sheltered workshops in Fulton and Cobb counties. Preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Amoss is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Sandra Sharlene Goggans Amoss, of Fairburn; son, Benjamin McRae Amoss Jr., of Farmville, VA; daughters, Sandra Gay Amoss Troxel and her husband Tim, of Snellville, and Paula Jane Amoss, of Roswell; grandchildren, Joanna Louise Troxel, of Atlanta, and Joseph Benjamin Troxel, of Snellville; sister, Mary Gay Amoss Tucker, of Auburn, AL; brother, John W. Amoss and his wife Catherine, of Pensacola, FL; and two generations of beloved nieces and nephews. Dr. Amoss was known for his affectionate teasing and good-natured storytelling, and he had many dear friends. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.higginshillcrestchapel.com. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, June 28, from 4-7 at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan. A funeral service will take place Wednesday at 11 am at First Baptist Church of Fairburn, with interment following at Holly Hill Memorial Park. Remains will be placed in state at the church at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute to enAble of Georgia, Inc., at 1200 Old Ellis Rd., Roswell, Ga 30076. Higgins Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home, Newnan, 770-253-4723.

Dear Amoss Family,

So sad to learn of Mr. Ben Amoss passing, and yet to know there is joy at his release from earthly pain. He hired me at Amoss Pharmacy in 1963, and I worked for two years there while in high school. His example of hard work, social grace, and wit taught me a lot. The lessons formed a basis for my career. His service and devotion to family, community, and church is noteworthy and his legacy will live on. Mr. Ben, will always have a special place in my heart, memory, and soul.

With love and condolence,
Larry W Brown

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
