My condolences to the Mathis family. My first picture of a successful black family was the Mathis family. I worked at their family business in Macon (Mathis Gulf Service Station) from 1972-1975. Charles Jr. was a great 'big brother' role model and I am blessed from the times I spent as an 'unofficial' adopted member of the Mathis family. Mr. Charles Mathis Sr was instrumental in my joining the US Army in 1975 (retired 1999). I am enternal grateful for getting to know this family. God bless you all. I love you all.

My condolences to Charles Mathis' family. I knew Charles for 30 years. We worked together on three jury trials and many other legal and political matters. He was a huge asset to any cause he took on. When we had a particularly difficult problem, we often got Charles involved. It was like the infantry calling in an air strike. He always worked extremely hard on his cases. A seeming chaos of dozens of people and projects seemed to swirl around Charles all the time. Somehow he kept up with it all and made it work. In the process of doing so, he routinely overcame seemingly impossible problems with ease. I used to think that Charles could get the law of gravity repealed if he wanted to. He did not succeed by being ruthless or mean, he was always a nice guy and a gentleman. He seemed to know everyone wherever he went. People liked Charles and he liked people.
I will miss Charles. This is a loss for a lot of people and many good causes.

My deepest regrets to the entire Mathis family, I am truly so saddened for your loss of a great man. He was always, and will always be an inspiration to me as a man who broke so many barriers and excelled at everything he set out to do. Charles accomplished more in his way too short time here on earth than any normal person would hope to achieve in 10 lifetimes. He broke racial boundaries when the boundaries were unbreakable. He was a pioneer for equality, and justice for all that he represented, professionally and personally. Charles was a person who loved and gave love and kindness to all that were fortunate to have crossed paths with him. I will always carry fond memories of every loved one that he loved and cared for. I will keep your family in my prayers. Much love and respect. Sincerely Laura Harvey

Charles was not only a great jurist, but, a real gentleman, both in and away from the courtroom. I remember when he worked for his father at his Gulf station in Macon, where I delivered fuel/supplies for my uncle. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him when he became an attorney in Milledgeville where we were on opposing sides. America has lost a dedicated jurist and I have lost a friend. I'm a better person for having known him. Peace brother.

To the Mathis family,
If I were asked who my heros are it would have to be Charles A. Mathis ,in 1982 I had a custody battle in the state of Ga. He took my case ,not for the money but for the fact he wanted my kids with me and he belived in ME!!
It turned out to be one of the longest custody battles in the state of Ga.,in the end all he could tell me was I had a 50% chance of keeping my 3 beautiful children.after 6 months of court battles ,he drove up to my house on a Saturday afternoon to deliver the NEWS ,we WON,I am forever grateful for this MAN!!Rest in peace mr Mathis and know you were loved by many.

Cynthia, CoCo, Chas and Allison: My heart is heavy when I think of you all continuing without Charles. But I also remember the great love and pride he had for all of you. He worked hard, and believed mightily in the importance of representing people in need. Of those he represented, he would say "they're good people." Nothing St. Peter could say to him at the gates of heaven would please him more, than "Come on in, Charles: you're good people.". And the people said, "Amen."

To the Mathis Family:
At this time my prayers are with you. As you know Charles was a wonderful person who genuinely cared about other people. In my freshman year of law school (76-'77) we were the only two active African Americans law students at the Mercer University School of Law in Macon, Georgia. He was a year ahead of me. I was from Washington DC and Charles was from Macon. He took me under his wing. We started BALSA together and it has flourished ever since. We worked with Professor Sammons to recruit other African American law students. Charles was tenacious and steadfast in our right to be treated fairly and equally. The many African American law students and lawyers who have matricuated at and graduated from Mercer's law school stand on his shoulders. You can be proud of the legacy your husband, father, grandfather and brother left. We will miss him.

Attorney Mathis will be missed by many, but his legacy will live on through his family and through the generations of families who he helped directly and indirectly. He was the best boss I ever had. My sympathy goes out to his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers and others who were part of his life. May you take comfort in the promise of Jesus … “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” -- John 14:3
