Dan Garson Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

GARSON, Dan DAN GARSON Dan Garson, 89, loving and devoted husband of Charlotte Rosen Garson, died of complications from a fall on October 31, 2009 at home under care of Weinstein Hospice and dedicated caregivers. Dan was born in Atlanta on June 22, 1920 at old Piedmont Hospital, son of Frank and Gussie Garson. Dan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Charlotte; daughter, Lynn Garson Goodman; son and daughter-in-law, Frank Garson II and Rhonda Garson; grandchildren, Paige Garson, and Daniel, Jean, and Rose Goodman; sister, Joy Garson Chase; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lester and Deborah Rosen; lifelong friend and cousin, Seymour Arnold and his wife Carla; and many loving nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Dan attended Boys' High in Atlanta and Duke University, Class of 1941. He joined the Army Air Corps and served from 1942 until the end of World War II. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he joined the family business, the Lovable Company, which was founded by his father and mother, Frank and Gussie Garson. He rose to become Chairman of the Board and held this position until the company was dissolved in 1998. He was a pioneer in the integration of the workplace and attended the first Martin Luther King dinner. Dan was a scratch golfer, winning the Bobby Jones Invitational in 1939 and six club championships at The Standard Club. He was a member of the Duke Golf team from 1937 through 1941. He played golf all over the world. The crown jewel of his golfing career, to him, was beating Jack McLean, pro at Gleneagles (Scotland) with a score of 68 on May 19, 1957. Dan's community and philanthropic interests ranged far. He served two terms as President of The Standard Club. He was a member of The Temple, Board member of the Atlanta Jewish Federation, a member of the American Jewish Committee and their past honoree on two occasions. He was a member of the Board of the Jewish Home, which his father founded. He continued in his father's footsteps as co-Chair of building the new facility on Howell Mill Road. He was a Board member of the Georgia State University Business School and was honored by the Georgia Foundation of Independent Colleges for fifty years of support. He was a staunch supporter of the United Negro College Fund. He was a great supporter of his college alma mater as a member of the Washington Duke Club and the President's Council of Duke University. He was a member of the Director's Circle of the High Museum of Art, among other civic interests. After Dan retired, he joined SCORE (the volunteer arm of the Small Business Administration dedicated to advising small businesses) and served as a counselor for many years. A memorial service will be held at The Temple on Tuesday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m. with Rabbi Peter Berg officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Weinstein Hospice (3150 Howell Mill Rd, Atlanta GA 30327), The Temple (1589 Peachtree Road, Atlanta GA 30309) or the High Museum of Art (1280 Peachtree Street, Atlanta GA 30309). The family will receive at home on Wednesday, November 4 and Thursday, November 5 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Please sign the on-line guestbook at www.edressler.com. To the Garson Family:

Mr. Garson was truly a great man and I am honored to have known him and work with him at SCORE. He always challeged my mind with his word for word games he did when he was in the office and dared me to find a word in his collection that was not in Webster dictionary. That taught me a lot. Please find comfort in each other and keep his memories close to your hearts.

Love,
Evelyn Walton

Dear Garson family,

I was very sad to hear of Mr. Garson's passing. He was a great man and a wonderful friend to my grandfather! I have fond memories of running around the Loveable plant on Piedmont Ave on Saturday mornings! Mr. Garson and my grandfather always took time to give us "work" to do! I am sure the two of them are somewhere having a cup of coffee and talking business! Please know my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Dear Lynn,

I am just seeing the announcement about your dad this evening. It sounds as though he was very much a wise, insightful, forward-thinking man. I remember once meeting him at your house many, many years ago, but of course didn't know then the full extent of what he had achieved and how much he meant to those around him. Take care, and the best to you and your family, Dree Harris

It is my experience in life that some people touch our lives for a short time and pass through and some remain forever in our hearts. Mr. Dan Garson's memory has touched me forever. I was one of his caregivers from Weinstein Hospice.
Mr. Garson was an example of a man with the highest integrity. He was intelligent, kind, gracious, witty, pulled no punches, loved his family and Candy his dog, and touched me personally in so many simple ways.
I will cherish our time together and be a better person for having known him and his family.
