As a basketball player, he was the missing piece that was added to make the team elite. As a man he was uniquely elite, with class, dedication and style until the end. He will be missed.

May God's love comfort the Roundfield family. Growing up in Roswell, GA as a sports fanatic, Rounds was one of my childhood sports heroes. He was a great role model in the way he carried himself on and off the court. RIP Danny.

Gary Smith - neighbor

Dan was one of the finest persons that anyone would hope to meet. He was my neighbor and friend for many years. We had many fun times at our house when Dan and Bernie would come to our parties. Corey and Chris were and still remain attached with my children. Dan's house was on a high hill, and when Corey and Chris would try to play basketball at their house, the ball would roll down their long driveway, so both boys spent a lot of time at our house shooting hoops, because the area was flat. Corey was on my soccer team once, and Dan volunteered to be my assistant coach. What a wonderful guy. I will miss him.

That Danny's life ended saving his wife, Bernie, whom he loved more than life is tragic but not surprising.

Whenever I was in their presence the love and contentment they shared was always so evident. Their lives together were a perfect union. Their love was one of the greatest loves of all.

I deeply mourn Danny's passing and pray Bernie's strong faith in God and God's grace strengthen her during this time of immense sorrow.

To the Family and Loved Ones of Dan Roundfield: I feel grief stricken and I only saw Dan on TV as a basketball warrior. A magnificent brother in the eyes of someone who hardly knew him so I can sense the magnitude of your loss. Not surprisng that his last act and attitude was heroism. I pray GOD's blessing and comfort for you.

Dear Bernie, Christopher, Corey and Family,
I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Danny. He was my roommate my first year at CMU after I transferred from Grambling in Louisiana. We had some fun and wonderful times. We were like Mutt and Jeff, he was 6'8'” and I was only 5'8”. I remember back in the old field house (Finch) while I ran track and he played basketball. It was a fun time of friendship and kinship between the track team and basketball team. Going back to our last year at CMU, remembering Danny marrying Bernie and I married Regina and living in the same married house units. My wife and I thought you guys were a perfect couple. I can say Danny was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He was a great gentleman and smart also. Bernie and family you have our prayers. Words cannot express our sorrow for your lost. I will leave you with words of comfort.
Psalms 30: 5 weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
1 Thessalonians Chapter 4
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

May God Bless you Bernie and your family

Danny, what a great legacy that you have left in this part of the world. Obviously, your mother did a great job at raising you. As a fan of yours, I enjoyed watching you as a Hawks' fan each night, but I am more pleased with your efforts for life, family, and the respect for others. In regards to basketball, there was not a power forward and small forward tandem, besides Dr. J and McGinnis, in the NBA, in the late 70's, that could out play you and John Drew. And, you all would have defeated that tandem, if you would have defended Dr. J and Drew guarded McGinnis! RIP and may God console your family, friends, and fans?

I was so very sadden to hear about Dan, my fondest memory of him..is when he came to my going away gathering when I left Juvenile Justice when I moved, he use to tease me about my height (5ft) ..and I would tell him, that's ok..caz.when it rains you will get wet first. Please know I'm praying for you and your family and may my poem be a source of encouragement to you.

Your Burdens I Will Bear
By: Evangelist Johnnye V. Chandler

I know that it has really been hard for you..just to
face another day
And I know you think...that the pain will never go away..
And I know it's not easy trying to hold on..
When you feel like..the one you loved the most is gone..
But “Our Father”..really loves and is concerned about you
And He is saying..no matter what you are facing,
I will see you through…
He knows your pain and the hurt that seemingly won't subside
He see's the tears...that keep falling from your eyes..
And He knows that it is really hard for you to understand why
That it feels like sadness…will always reside..
But, He is saying “I Am” is with you..and I'll
never leave your side
Just lean on me..for I will be your comfort through
these hard times..
And even though word's alone cannot take away all the
hurt that you now feel
But, “I the Lord thou God”..will strengthen you, and
comfort you and your hurt I will heal..
For you are “my child and I love you”..and yes, I really do care..
And through it all..always believe that
“your burdens I will bear”….

He was on the Hawks team when I was a teenager, and I went to many games. One day my Aunt who lived in Michigan was flying home after visiting us in Atlanta. She had heard me talk about the Atlanta Hawks a lot. A few days later she mailed me a letter with a note inside. She ended up sitting next to Dan Roundtree on the plane to Detroit, and got his autograph for me after she told him about me and what a fan I was. I had that piece of paper in my wallet for years until my purse was stolen in KY in the 90's. Thank you and God bless from a Hawks fan.

I met Dan in 2001 as a Basketball Coach at the Native Vision Sports camp. We became friends and worked together at every camp since 2001 and e-mailed and talked through the years.

He was such a positive role model for the Kids at the camp.

He always laughed at me because I have a fear of flying and would be on a Bus for two days to get to the camp from Lexington, Kentucky.

He also was taken by the fact that I could remember watching his games when he played and always e-mailed him when NBA TV showed his games.

I last saw him at the 2012 Native Vision Sports camp and we talked about me coming to a Bulls-Hawks game this upcoming NBA season as his guest.

Thanks Dan for making me a better person and basketball coach.

I will miss you!!

Dear Bernie, Christopher, Corey and Family,

We are so saddened to hear of Danny's passing! He was the most WONDERFUL husband, father and Grandfather. Danny was the sweetest, kindest, generous and most honest man, and the World has lost the most exemplary man too soon.

We cherish memories of watching our boys play ball, going out with you two in the evenings, attending charities together, and Tom loved playing baseball and golf with Danny. We have recently said repeatedly that we wanted to make a date with you two, and are so devastated he's no longer among us.

Our thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with you and your family. Again, we will cherish our memories of him.

We wish you strength.

All Our Love,

To Bernie, Christopher and Corey; the Roundfield Family;

Our condolences and prayers are offered at this time. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;” (2Corinthians 1:3).

I am truly devastated by the loss my dear Friend and Teammate, Danny. Danny is my “special” CMU companion and teammate on the court and off the court, as well.

In our telephone conversations we would remind each other that we would call again to stay in contact with one another – and we did through the years. As tears come to my eyes, I'm going to miss our conversations. I looked forward to hearing from Danny; we would just talk about our families, past CMU days and whatever was happening at the time. Danny is the one CMU friend that was more like a brother; being almost two years older than he, he is like a younger brother.

Danny is a man of upright character; character which will live on to eternity. I say that “Danny is” because he does still live, not in this world as we know it, but in heaven as we can only be so blessed to see and talk to again. Even though I may have tears and sorrow now, I look forward to the day that I will see and hear Danny again. Because Danny slept.

“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” (1Corinthians 15:20)

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.”
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
“For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.” (1Thessalonians 4: 13-15)

“And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:26).

I do believe. So I will see you Danny, my Friend, my Teammate, my Companion, my Brother.

DANNY IS…

Bernie,
My heart goes out to you and your family at this said time. I am the widow of Leonard Drake,my late husband was a friend and former teammate of Rounds as Leonard called him. Danny and Leonard keep in connect over the years. When Leonard passed Danny was one of his pallbears along with other CMU players. When a husband is taken from his family so soon and at a young age it is even harder. My daughter put it best the day I told her..." GOD TAKES ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE" I believe that and know that Danny and Leonard are remembering CMU memory and missing both of us. You are in my prayers!

Dear Bernie and family, You were blessed to have Danny in your lives as we all were. Thank you for sharing him with us. The last email I received from him he wrote about his wonderful wife and how proud he was of his sons and how much he loved his grandchildren. He remembered how I gave him rides at CMU in my small car and how we would laugh that his knees touched the windshield even with the seat all the way back and my fear of what would happen to his knees if I stopped fast or we got in an accident. So I would drive so slow it would drive him crazy....He would tell me to speed up and I would respond with that I was not going to be responsible for ruining those basketball legs of his.
He was a class act, a gentlemen, devoted to his family, and respected by those that knew him. There can be nothing more honorable than that. This is a huge loss for those who remain, but a huge gain for heaven!! Rest in Peace Danny. It was a pleasure knowing you. Prayers and thoughts to your family.

Bernie my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I was so sad to hear of Danny's loss. I have many great memories growing up and watching him play for the Hawks at the Omni. His hard working character and class went beyond the court. I consider myself honored to have been able to meet and work with Danny very early in my career at SouthTrust. Back then I was just the vault keeper and he treated me as if I owned the bank! He was a respectful and professional man who truly cared about others. Bernie, it has been years since we have spoken but I have always remembered the positive work you both did for so many. Peace be with you and your family.

Danny and I attended Durfee Junior High School in Detroit. He was my best friend at the time. What folks don't know is that Danny was a better baseball player. We played on a little league team together and we thought that we would be the next great outfield for the Detroit Tigers. He was a great friend. We drifted apart during high school (He went to Chadsey and I went to Central) but I attended a number of his HS basketball games and followed his college and pro career. He was a person who would give you the shirt off his back and my Prayers go out to his family and all of those that he touched. I feel your pain. He will always be a good friend.

I was a good friend of Dan through my wife who went to school with him at Central Michigan. I was excited to find out she knew Dan personally because I admired his play on the court in the NBA. When I finally met him and got to know him he to me was a better man than he was a basketball player. He taught me a lot on how to be a man and to be faithful and loving to my wife. Great example of what a man should be to his wife as God tells us to be. I will miss our Friday brunches after Thanksgiving. You will be missed Dan.

August 10, 2012

I remember getting up early and getting my seat in the first row under the basket at Rose Arena with Hoe Boy, Bird and Pete Ruch. The reason we arrived so early was to watch our Chips and specifically Dan Roundfield. We would taunt our opponents and Dan would always smirk and recognize our support. Many years have passed but the memory lives on. God bless you Dan.
Thanks for the memories.

We just talked last week, and were planning a lunch. How do things change so dramatically, so tragically, and with such finality. I have known Dan for over thirty years, since working with Turner, and traveling and covering the Hawks telecasts. We have been friends since then, and if I knew anything about him, I knew of his love for Bernie and his family...they were who he was. I am so not ready to say goodbye...it just doesn't seem real. My heart, my prayers go to his family. How you get through this can only be aided by knowing how many people loved Danny, and care about your well-being. I wish I could do something, other than just to say I am so very, deeply sorry, and will miss my friend deeply.

Words cannot express how Danny's passing has affected our family. We are all still in shock. I, along with my son Nate and daughter Donica had the pleasure of being with Danny, Bernie, Corey, and Christopher on many occasions. My Ex, Nate Williams, played in the NBA with Danny, and James "Mac" McElroy introduced us to Bernie and Danny Roundfield in New Orleans when Mac and Nate were with the Jazz. What a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and all around great guy he was. However bittersweet, Bernie will always have the memory of the greatest love and sacrifice a husband could give. Danny will most definitely be missed! My love, and prayers forever go out to Bernie and the Boys.

To Bernie, Christopher and Corey, our prayers are with you right now, we will truly miss Danny, he was a great man and well loved by all @ the R&D family, when we all worked together all those many years ago. I especially remember the Red Porche!! I had the opportunity to talk to him on last year @ CH2M Hill when I found out he was there and we picked up on old times just like we had never left R&D. I still cannot believe that he is no longer here with us. But we do know that he is in a better a place.

I've had the pleasure of working with Danny since 2007 at CDM Smith. There are so many good things I can say about him. As echoed in previous entries, his work ethic was strong, he was a man of his word and most importantly, a man of God. But what stands out the most for me was his integrity and character. He was personable, jovial, and down-to-earth and one of the definition of true "gentle giant." Over the years, we shared many passing conversations about life outside of the office and his family was always one of the first things that would come up. The love and pride he felt for his wife, sons, and grandchildren was evident. I will will truly miss his presence and know that others that had the opportunity to work with him feel the same. All the best to his family and friends during this difficult time.

I first met Danny when he played with the Pacers through his representative Garry. I have been to basketball camps with him, his home in Atlanta and on other events. Bernie and your sons, we will be thinking of you.

These blogs show a grand legacy for Dan. I have incredibly fond memories of this gentle giant. Here are some to share. Walking down hallways, people would frequently look up and ask if he was a basketball player and he was humble by replying he did a while ago without going into details about how great he once was. He laughed when people would mistaken him for Tree Rollins. He had a deep booming voice that seemed tailor made for radio but he claimed that he had stuttered when he was younger and it would not work on the radio. He had a geat knowledge of NBA history that he and I would often debate about. He even found an error on an ESPN article years ago that they had to write a retraction about. Rounds told me that he would ask his coaches to defend the superstars of his era. This included a time when he chose to defend a white hot Larry Bird and told me that it was easy to guard him because he knew his moves but Larry still got his share of points. Dan claimed he was a far better baseball player in high school than basketball and that he thought he would make it further in baseball if not for his height. He was so dedicated to his wife, Bernie, who was so frequently at his side and often seemed to quietly admire her husband when adorIng fans would monopolize his time right in front of her. He was involved with charity work in the metro Atlanta area and thank him for exposing my nephew to one of his Tourets Syndrome basketball charities from his side on the bench. He was recently given a long deserved place in a Hall of Fame (Michigan Sports Hall of Fame) with the induction next week. He deserves the same in Georgia and with the Hawks for his overall contributions. I knew him well and my heart goes out to Bernie, Cory and Chris. Rounds has an immortal legacy that his family can always remember.

Any time Danny was around he would take Denny's son Darywn and I across the street to Coach Parfitt's to shoot hoops. He always made time for us when he came around. I idolized him and James McElroy as a kid. He was a great player and an even better person. My prayers are with his family.

Our family is so sorry to hear of the untimely passing of your husbans and father. My son, Ian Rachelefsky went to HIES with Corey and spent many an afternoon playing at your home. When I picked Ian up, he would always tell us what a nice man Corey's Dad was.
I hope you all can find the peace you need at some point, but always keep your dad's memories in your hearts. Paua and Marvin Rachelefsky and family.

Danny was the greatest defensive player during the era of the greatest offensive players, but that was trivial compared to his gift for kindness and friendship. He was my dear friend and I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. My heart aches for his wife Bernie, his sons Chris and Corey, the grandchildren he adored and also for his best friend James McElroy. I'll always love you, Danny.

As a teen growing up watching the Superstation on TBS and seeing Dan Roundfield, he is probably the most underrated power forward in the league, he was a bule collar workers type of ball player. Prayers for the Rounfield family and Hawks Org.

My prayers go out to the Roundfield family for the loss of their love one. Dan Roundfield was a childhood hero of mine and remains one of my favorite Hawk. Hopefully, the Hawks honor Dan during the season and retire his jersey number.

When I was growing up in Roswell in the 80's, us kids would see Mr. Roundfield around town and we would be in total awe. He always, and I mean absolutely always, took the time to say hello and talk to us. One of my hero's is gone, and he will be missed. RIP..

When and old friend, Danny's CMU teammate Len Drake, died a couple of years ago, I called a friend at the Hawks and asked if he could get my contact info to Danny, who I hadn't talked to in over 30 years. Within the hour, my phone rang and it was Danny, telling me that he was planning to drive all night to get to South Bend for Len's funeral. We emailed back and forth occasionally, but hadn't spoken for a while. The other day I was looking at a picture he had sent me of him with Dr. J and 'Nique, and thought about emailing him, but put it off, to my great sorry. Hope he and Len are pounding the boards together right now. My thoughts are with the family.

Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus said, "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
