Edward Garnes Obituary
Family-Placed Death Notice
GARNES, Edward, Sr. Edward M. Garnes, Sr. Edward M. Garnes, Sr., returned to glory on February 18, 2011. He was born in Hazlehurst, GA on September 26, 1949. A man of deep faith, Garnes served as a Lay Leader and Board of Trustees member of Epworth United Methodist Church. A dedicated patriot and life long activist, Garnes was a 71' graduate of Morehouse College and Vietnam Veteran serving as an Intelligence Analyst in Okinawa, Japan. In 1976, Garnes began a historic career serving 31 years in various positions at the Fulton County Juvenile Court where he retired as Clerk of Court in 2007. He was the only person in organizational history to be elected to serve three terms as president of the Georgia Association of Independent Juvenile Courts (GAIJC). Most recently, he served as Chair of East Point's Cultural Commission. While his varied awards, distinctions, and honors are to numerous to list, his service included the Morehouse College Alumni Association, National Juvenile Services Association, Fulton County Employees Association, The National Law Enforcement Involvement Committee, Lorenzo Benn Youth Development Center, and Georgia State Senate Juvenile Probation Task Force. Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2 PM at Epworth United Methodist Church, 1561 McLendon Ave, Atlanta, GA. Instate 1 PM. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church at 12:30 PM on the day of the service. He is survived by two sons: Edward and Elliott Garnes; two sisters: Delois Brown (Charles) and Annette Garnes; one brother Eugene Garnes. I met Ed Garnes when I was transferred from the old Fulton County Jail on Jefferson Street to the Juvenile Court on Capitol Avenue. Ed was a probation officer and I would cross his path constantly as this involved my work.
I worked at the court til 1995 when I retired and on occasions, would go back to see people I knew and worked with.
I remember seeing Ed at the unveiling portrait of Judge Sanford Jones a couple years ago. I haven't had the time to get back to my friends and former fellow employees, but I wish I have.
Rest in peace, my friend. It was a pleasure to know you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I offer my condolence and sympathy to the family of Edward Garnes Sr. It's never easy to suffer the loss of a beloved family member no matter what the age or circumstance. As one of my hometown family friends, I knew Edward as a smart, energetic and enthusiastic individual. We shared laughs and conversations. His legacy and memory speaks of a life well lived. Rest In Peace dear Neighbor.

In life a very remarkable, charismatic, resourceful, unique and kind person that radiated a most beautiful spirit and demeanor. From earliest childhood on, through out high school, college and adulthood, he has touched so many lives in a positive, caring, wonderful and unforgettable manner. A kind, caring, strong, positive, and funny person with a distinct laugh. It was always a pleasure to run into him and catch up on our hometown and our cousins. We had some great times together and we will miss him from stopping by occasionally. We love you Ed.
