Eric Wilcox Obituary

WILCOX, Eric Eric Davis Wilcox, 71 died on September 17, 2019. Born in Tyler, TX in 1947, Eric attended Robert E. Lee High School where he was a competitive athlete. He followed in the Wilcox football tradition and attended Georgia Tech like his father and two uncles had before him. He was a line backer for Coach Bobby Dodd, still holding the record of 28 solo tackles in one game against the University of Georgia in 1967. He began a career in Commercial Real Estate working on projects like the San Antonio Riverwalk and he was a motivating force behind Arnold Palmer in the development of the famed Isleworth Golf Course in Orlando. Setting back in Atlanta with his wife and two daughters, Eric enjoyed nothing more than watching football, hunting, playing golf and spending time with all his friends and loving family. The greatest joy of his life was his granddaughter Weezy. Survived by wife; Linda C. Wilcox, daughters; Bradley C. Wilcox, Kyle Garges and (Kelly) and granddaughter; Weezy Garges, Brother; Marc Wilcox (Sally).

Just learned of Eric's death. Eric was my roommate for a few month back in the early 70s. I went to Notre Dame so you can imagine the banter between us. He was a good guy and a great ball player for the Yellow Bees. R.I.P., Eric.

Eric and I were both freshman football players in summer of 65 both of us knew no one when we arrived Eric quickly established himself as dominant defensive player and only an untimely injury kept him from stardom Eric on the surface was gruff and demanding but that was only a ploy because he had a heart of gold I can still hear his deep hearty laugh when amused I regret out paths haven't crossed recently

Entering GA Tech in the fall of 1967 to play football, I was a few years behind Eric and as a freshman became well aware of his reputation as a fierce player and competitor which was only exceeded by the fierce looks he gave to us freshmen. So it was with a lot of trepretation when as a sophmore showing up for summer practice, I found my self assigned to room with Eric at the famed Tech Motel for summer practice. He was listed as the starting middle linebacker and I was his understudy backup which is why I assumed the coaches had us paired as roommates for summer practice. Always will remember he had a stereo in our room at the Tech Motel with Jose Faleciano(S) records which I thought was the coolest thing ever. None of the other players/students I knew had a stereo in their rooms!
Unfortunately, Eric had torn his achilles tendon sometime before our season started which greatly hampered his playing in his final season. A great disappointment to him I am sure, and our coaches, as that meant I had to play middle linebacker as an inexperienced underclassman who had been slated for Red Shirting that year.

Despite Eric's fierce look and demeaner as a player, he always had kind and encouraging words for me as I attempted to fill the huge roll our coaches had expected Eric to play on our defense in 1968.

Prayers for Eric and his family on his passing.

Eric and I were Football Team mates and incoming freshman together the Fall of 1965 . Our Freshman team had many from the State of Georgia so those of us from other states naturally came together quickly those first 30 days of practice before school started .Eric and I also pledged Phi Delta theta , and played on defense our 4 years at Tech . Thou after College , Eric and I went to different states to begin our careers , we could meet for a Football weekend and our friendship was restarted where we left off . I am saddened by our loss . My prayers for Linda and the girls .

I met Eric through my brother Kim at Ga. Tech. They were room mates at one time during football season. I would run into Eric once in awhile at the Atlanta Airport. It was always a pleasure talking with him. I'm sure he, Coach Dodd and Kim are already talking football. My prayers go out to his family.

So sad to hear of Eric's passing. We had been good friends since our freshman year in high school, co captains of the Robert E. Lee Rebels football team , roommates after college and raised a lot of hell together on Eric's road to heaven. One of the best football players I ever played with, very many great memories. Although we haven't seen each other for many years, I will long remember # 40. My condolences to Eric's family at this time of great loss.

Eric was a very close friend, a mentor and a real estate partner over a span of 40 years that ranged from San Antonio Tx to Atlanta Ga. We experienced the highs and lows of life together and he was always there if needed. He will be greatly missed by many. Eric Wilcox RIP!
