Hazel Eubanks Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Hazel Bentley Eubanks, 83, died Monday, September 8. She was the widow of J. Robert Eubanks, who died in 1997. They were married for 54 years. She was born in Lincoln County, Georgia, a daughter of Gladys and Benjamin F. Bentley. She had been a resident of Atlanta since 1950. Mrs. Eubanks is survived by her sons and their wives, Gary and Virginia Eubanks of Marietta and Marshall and Stephanie Eubanks of Clifton, Virginia, and her grandchildren, Catherine, James and Marshall. She is also survived by a sister, Frances B. Wheeler of Leah, Georgia; a brother, Jack Bentley of Lincolnton, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge the devoted care given Mrs. Eubanks by Marguerite Gibson for the past 11 years. Mrs. Eubanks was a member of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church since 1950. During those years she served in a number of capacities, including teacher of the King's Men Bible Class and the Aliae Ladies' Class; president of the Women's Missionary Union; and, most recently, chairman of the Heritage Committee, which is writing a history of the church for its 150th anniversary. Mrs. Eubanks also served on the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1982-1990, the first woman from Georgia to do so. She was a long-time supporter of Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. She served two terms as trustee and was awarded an honorary doctor of humanities degree in 2001. The Hazel B. Eubanks Dormitory was named in her honor in 1991. Mrs. Eubanks served on the Organizing Committee of the Atlanta Girls' Club (now Girls Inc.) in 1952. She held several positions in the local organization, including serving as president from 1955-58. She was a director of the national organization from 1956-1978, serving in many regional and national positions, including national president from 1968-1970. She was active in many genealogical organizations, serving in various capacities in most of them: Fort James Chapter, Colonial Dames 17th Century (organizing president); Huguenot Society (state president); Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims; Daughters of the American Revolution; National Society Magna Charta Dames, Georgia Division; and James E. Oglethorpe Chapter, National Society Daughters of American Colonists (regent). In 1982, she compiled a family history, Strother and Allied Families. Mrs. Eubanks and her husband were avid travelers, visiting all 7 continents. They made a point of visiting Southern Baptist missionaries during their travels in Italy, Japan, Kenya, Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Israel. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12, at 10:00 A.M. at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church with Dr. David Sapp and Dr. Gregory DeLoach officiating. The family will receive guests following the service in the church fellowship hall.. A private burial service will be held at Greenwood Baptist Church in Amity, Georgia, at 3:30 P.M. Mrs. Hazel Eubanks was an amazing woman who gave back to society so much more than she was ever given. How fortunate students and alumni of Shorter College, and children of the Girls Club along with endless others have been to be recipients of her love and contributions. And most of all how fortunate her family has been to know someone with such unselfish generosity that has had an impact on thousands of people. We're sure God in Heaven is happy to finally have her home. We'll miss you, Aunt Hazel.
