James Colvin Obituary


Family-Placed Death Notice

James R. (Jake) Colvin, 87, of Sandy Springs died February 7, 2004. Visitation will be Monday, February 9, 4 pm-7 pm at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 10, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Park. Mr. Colvin was born in Lincoln County, Georgia and graduated with honors from the University of Georgia in 1937. He also held the LLB and LLM degress from Atlanta Law School. He was beloved principal and teacher at Fayette Co. High School for 4 years. Mr. Colvin joined the U.S. Army and was selected as Company Commander of the 3rd Battalion 338th Infantry. Within 16 months, he rose in rank from draftee to Captain. He was seriously wounded south of Rome but was later able to return to his unit. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge along with numerous other service ribbons. Mr. Colvin worked at Lockheed for 21 years where he held several positions in management. After taking early retirement in 1972, he was employed by the State Crime Commission as a Senior Planner. Mr. Colvin was an active member of the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church where he held many positons of leadership and was a proud member of the Apelles Sunday School Class. He was honored to be inducted into the Sons of of the American Revolution (SAR). He loved his former students, his army friends, his family and his God. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lois J. Colvin; daughters, Beth Colvin Huff and Jan Colvin Davenport; grandchildren, Melanie and Tyler Davenport; sons-in-law, Dr. John Huff and David Davenport; sisters, Etta C. Holmes and Martha C. Wynne; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery Endowment Fund or to Paul Anderson Youth Home, P.O. I started work at Lockheed in 1956 after Army service as a trainee under the direction of Jake and others, and liked him very much. He was certainly a fine man. I believe that he told me, when we moved to Statesboro, that he had a relative here in the clothing business.
