I am only now aware that Jim died almost two years ago. It has filled me with sadness and a new sense of gratitude to this wonderful man. Jim served as chair of my doctoral committee at Emory in the mid 1980's and was a great help and encouragement during the process. I have always felt that this accomplishment was the best of my educational experience and I appreciate his help so very much. I am sorry and will pray for the family because I know you still miss this bigger than life man so much.

As a youth at Madison Methodist Church (before "United') I knew Jim and Lurline when they led the youth group. I went on to get my MDiv at Drew. Of course we studied Jim's stages of faith. It is only now that I learn the youth leader and the scholar are the same person! I am now an ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ. My thanks to Jim and Lurline for their leadership and my condolences to the family.

Jim Fowler had just arrived at Emory University when I started graduate school there in Theology in 1978. He was one of the brightest, and most compassionate professors I have ever had the opportunity of working with. Although I am a Psychologist now, I have to say, he taught me more about Erikson and Piaget than my graduate professors in Psychology ever did. He also
taught me about the stages of faith, and about how we can foster and encourage stage changes in individual's expression of faith. I am not only a better Psychologist, I am also a better man for having known him and having the opportunity to have learned from him. Dr. Dave Eckstrand

Margaret and all the family, we were sorry to learn about the death of Jim. He has been such a bright light in the fields of theology and ethics. Being a graduate of Emory University's School of Theology, Melvin is especially thankful for the leadership Jim has brought to that school through the years. Our prayer for all the family is that God's comfort will assist you in rejoicing in all the wonderful memories you have of Jim.
