Nobody put Jerry in the corner.
Jerry Orbach was one of the unlikeliest leading men in history. Born in the Bronx to a pair of performers, the actor with the Vaselined hair and the droopy-featured face only a basset hound's mama could love spent his adolescent years in Illinois. But the Broadway song-and-dance man turned latter-day TV icon always sounded like a guy from the streets of New York. With a slightly nasal, world-weary voice perfectly pitched for making wry observations and wisecracking asides, he should never have played anything other than the other guy --- the work buddy or second-best friend.
Instead, when Orbach left us Tuesday at age 69 after a brief battle with prostate cancer, he was right where he'd seemingly always been in his show-business career: at center stage.
You don't die more in the middle of things than did Orbach, whose new television series, "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," was slated to join the NBC schedule later this season. A representative of the show told The Associated Press Wednesday that Orbach is expected to appear in early episodes of the third spin-off of "Law & Order," the book-'em-and-cook-'em drama about cops and D.A.'s that arguably started the whole procedural series phenomenon in 1990.
Orbach was to have returned as Lennie Briscoe, the sardonic, street-smart detective he played to pithy perfection for 12 years on "Law & Order." It was to have been a secondary role (having retired from the NYPD, Briscoe now would take on investigating tasks for the D.A.'s office), but, really, who among us was dumb enough to believe that?
He'd been quietly stealing the show --- every show he'd ever been in --- practically since 1960, when he appeared (where else?) off-off-Broadway as the narrator in a new show called "The Fantasticks." It went on to run for 42 years, and Orbach --- who began and ended each show by warbling the haunting "Try to Remember" --- went on to star in numerous Broadway musicals, including "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Promises, Promises," for which he won a Tony.
His movie roles ranged from Lumiere, the candelabra kids instantly loved in "Beauty and the Beast," to the inherently decent doctor dad who heard Patrick Swayze pronounce "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" at the end of 1987's "Dirty Dancing."
Swayze became an overnight sensation, but it was Orbach who waltzed off with enduring fame, thanks in no small part to "Law & Order."
And vice versa.
If the show seems likely to stay around forever, if only in reruns, much credit goes to Orbach, who gave "L&O" personality and a heart where it was supposed to have none. Cases, not characters, were what viewers were supposed to become invested in, which may explain why Orbach's two predecessors on the beat (George Dzundza, Paul Sorvino) were quickly gunned down to little viewer outrage.
Nobody knew what we were missing until Briscoe showed up with a work ethic as old-fashioned as his short-sleeved white shirts and an endless stream of irresistibly bad puns. Some of it was good writing, sure, but mostly it was Orbach's inimitable delivery and great sense of knowing where he and Briscoe belonged at all times.
Center stage.

The last time I saw Jerry we were police officers in San Diego in the 50's. He was a rookie. He told me that night that he was leaving and that he had a role in the "Fantastics"in New York. He grew that job into a fantastic career and it is with a heavy heart I too watch him when the real "Law and Order" comes on. Proud to have known such a man. Jack Carpenter

For Jerry...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Sorry to learn of your loss.
I enjoyed seeing that side of him when he starred as the father in Dirty Dancing. He acted like a good father would be, and especially, in the finale of it, to understand and appreciate, as well as apologize, for his wrong thoughts.
He continues to star in the detective tv series, and I miss him, each time I watch him, knowing that he is no longer here.
May he rest in peace, as he will always be remembered, with a memory that would do him proud.
God bless!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Hi Orbach Family,
I had just had surgery a few weeks before Jerry passed. I was really saddened, but I could not get the energy to sign his guestbook. I am just getting completely on my feet. I wanted to still express my sincere sympathy to you. I miss Jerry in the hit "Law & Order". He had sarcastic jokes that always made me smile. I grew such a passion for the show during my recovery that I could not even talk to my mother on the phone while his show was on.
This world has so many negative things going on in it, so when you see good guys like Jerry pass away, its like O No!, all the good are gone, who is going to keep goodness around. Thankfully though God has the whole situation in control. That is my hope and I also wanted to pass it on to you.
