Jessica Hunt Obituary

HUNT, Dr. Jessica K.

Dr. Jessica Kazimiera Karoliszyn Hunt passed away peacefully on September 1, 2021. A daughter of the late Ignacy and Kunegunda Karoliszyn, Dr. Hunt was born in what is currently Ukraine. She survived World War II in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1950. Throughout her life she continued to express her appreciation and gratitude for the privilege of building her future in America. She earned a BA degree from Case Western Reserve University and an MA and PhD degrees from Emory University. She was devoted to her family, teaching mathematics, and was the recipient of many teaching awards: She was chosen as a Star Teacher 13 times; Outstanding Teacher of the Year twice; recipient of the 2001 Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics by the GA Council of Teaching Mathematics; the recipient of the 2001 National Presidential Scholars Program Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education; and for the years 2000 and 2007, she was awarded the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished teaching of mathematics presented by the Mathematical Association of America.

In addition to her love for her family and teaching, she pursued a lifelong quest for knowledge and beauty that took her on a long rewarding journey of learning and savoring the results. She was fluent in five languages. She studied and enjoyed operas, vocal and instrumental recitals, and symphonic performances. Cherished by her loving family she departed our beautiful earth with reverberations from Gustav Mahler's, Das Lied Von Der Erde, (The Song of the Earth).

She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Dale E. Hunt, whom she married on June 20, 1959, one daughter, Maia Karlsen of Marietta, GA, one son, Stanley Hunt of Green Cove Springs, FL, two brothers, two sisters, and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a beloved son, Rommel E. Hunt, and two brothers, Eugene and John Karoliszyn.

Dr. Hunt was my trigonometry teacher back in 1999-2000. I always thought very highly of her, and still do. And she always thought highly of me. She would always be so proud when I did anything spectacular in math. She's one of the reasons I devoted my life to math and teaching math. I will always cherish her.

Love,
Ryan

I remember Mrs. Hunt fondly as my Trig and Calculus teacher at Towers High in the mid-1980´s. She was always available to answer questions, to guide with clues without giving the answer away, and had a warm, proud smile for you when you did well. She was such a wonderful teacher-I remember her white lab coats and her freshly-washed chalkboards fondly.
God bless you, Mrs. Hunt!

I was blessed to have studied AP Calculus under Dr. Hunt at Chamblee some 20 years ago and remember her fondly. May her family take comfort knowing there are countless others like me who´s lives she touched and who carry her memory forward.

I taught with Jessica for many years at Chamblee - I missed her a great deal when she retired and will miss her now she has passed.

The woman who taught me all about opera has gone to the Met in the Sky. I was so lucky to have been her driver all these years and will miss her always.
