Family-Placed Death Notice

Mrs. Katherine Loggins Long, age 79, of Fairburn and Riverdale, died on Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Katherine was born February 25, 1925 in Cobb County, and she grew up in Fairburn and Palmetto. She married Howard Long on December 28, 1946, and together they reared their family in Union City. In their later years, Katherine and Howard moved to Riverdale, where Katherine became a prolific quilter, and the neighborhood unofficial grandmother. Although Katherine and Howard had only two children of their own, she raised many more than that. She was "Nanny" to at least 20 children in the neighborhood for nearly 30 years. Katherine especially enjoyed watching her "children" grow up and cherished seeing them with children of their own. She made baby quilts for numerous babies and children, and then made full-size quilts for them when they graduated from school or got married. Katherine also made countless quilts for friends to give as gifts, as well as a number of quilts donated to charities for fund-raisers. Katherine freely shared her skills with others, and quilts are still being made for charity today as a result of her teaching. Katherine is preceded in death by her husband Howard E. Long, to whom she was married for almost 45 years, and by four brothers and one sister. She is survived by a son, Doug and Susan Long of Griffin, daughter Ron and Julie Long White of Palmetto, one granddaughter Kristina & David, Stephens, a sister, Lois Harper of Palmetto, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 17, 2005 at 2 o'clock at the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home. Rev. Troy Foster officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
