For Shirley and Family,

The first time I met Joe he seemed like one of the most down to Earth people that I had ever met. That feeling was proven each time I saw him and Shirley together. What a great nature and spirit he seemed to have within himself. A true joy. A delight that completely complimented Shirleys friendly, outgoing and remarkable personality. He will be missed but will live forever in the hearts of all who got to meet him and know him.

Shirley and Family,
Let me attempt to paint the picture that I have forever etched in my mind of Joe...
Every time that I saw Joe, it was with Shirley. It may have been at a city council meeting, Duluth festival, or some other function that Shirley, as mayor, had to attend. Look, and there was Joe, stoically standing beside her, like a support column on a building, maybe, with a hand placed gently on her arm, just being there, with her. Joe took great pride in what his wife was doing, and, it showed. In the little time that I knew Joe, I learned something from him. I learned from Joe that the words of Winston Churchill still ring true," We make a living by what we get. We make life by what we give." Joe will be missed.

"He was a quiet friend to all those who were lucky enough to have known him" - oh so true, and may I add that he had a heart as big as his smile.

Semper Fi my friend.
