Marvin LOYD Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LOYD, Marvin MARVIN LOYD Marvin Loyd, 98, of Brookhaven died November 1, 2012, following a stroke in his sleep on October 27. Born in a log cabin near Chamblee, Marvin worked at his family's Sunrise Dairy Farm and attended Chamblee High School, where he enjoyed baseball, basketball, and track. In 1933, he became the first male student to enter the newly formed Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, where he continued his athletic interests, became an award winning dancer, and acquired lifelong friends and treasured memories. After attending the University of Georgia, Marvin worked for the Post Office and helped at the dairy before serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II. As a crew chief, flight chief, and line chief for the storied P-47 Thunderbolt "Orange Tails," he followed D-Day troops across France and into Germany. After the war, Marvin began a 25-year career as Service Manager for the A.B. Dick Mimeograph Company in Atlanta. In 1948, he married the former Anne Black of Cartersville, to whom he remained a devoted husband for 61 years until her death in 2009. After retirement, Marvin's life revolved increasingly around his beloved Forum Sunday School Class of Chamblee First United Methodist Church, the same church of which his great-great-grandfather was a founding member in 1826. During these years Marvin also became an avid tennis player and developed an interest in distance running, enjoying the Peachtree Road Race into his 80's and winning his age group in the Georgia Senior Olympics for many years. Those victories led him to the National Senior Olympics, where he garnered third and fourth-place medals for the 5 and 10K in both Syracuse, NY, and San Antonio, TX. In his 90's, Marvin enjoyed walking extensively in his neighborhood and keeping up with his many cherished friends there. Most recently he spent two pleasant years in assisted living at Northlake Gardens in Tucker, where he continued his daily walks. Marvin is survived by his sister, Frances Spruill of Braselton; his children Ellis Loyd of Decatur, Ken and Judy Loyd of Southern Pines, NC, and Caryn and Steve Cole of LaGrange; grandchildren Jennifer and Matt Kirby of Aberdeen, NC, Amanda and Stephen Talbert of Pinebluff, NC, and Brantley and Lindsey Cole of LaGrange; and great-grandchildren Claire and Evan Kirby and Brianna and Hunter Talbert. Visitation 12:00-2:00 will be followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 5, at Chamblee First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Royeese Stowe officiating. Burial will be held at Prospect Cemetery, Chamblee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chamblee First United Methodist Church, 4147 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Chamblee, GA 30341. Arrangements by H.M. Patterson and Son, Oglethorpe Hill.

Not sure what to say?

November 9, 2012

I was so sorry to learn of Mr. Loyd's passing. My father John Rice and step-mother Mary Rice were neighbors of Mr. Loyd's at Northlake Gardens. My father passed away on November 1 of last year, so they share an anniversary of sorts. Both John and Mary were very fond of Mr. Loyd and his family. It has been an honor to get to know some of you in the last few years during our journeys at Northlake Gardens. You all have my most sincere sympathy, but also congratulations on a life so fully lived and a wonderful, close family.

Ken and family, I read with great interest the obituary for your Dad. I was pastor at Adairsville, Ga, near Cartersville, and have a lot of friends in that area. All of you in the family are in our prayers. J. Billy and Anne Graham

It is an honor for Bruce & me to know Mr. Loyd. He always wanted to know what was Bruce working on? He would take a gardenia for his wife. He honored us with his '48 Ford. It had no Brakes! Bruce got it from his home to ours. Who needs brakes? Ellis, you are the best son anyone could have!

Mr. Loyd was such a gracious gentleman. I enjoyed talking to him about Chamblee history. He was a wealth of knowledge about the people, businesses and churches.

I lived in Ashford Park (Winding Lane/Ashford Way) for 17 years (until mid-2010), and Mr. Loyd was one of the joys of living there. With a smile and a wave, he always brightened my day when I saw him out on his daily walks.

I loved seeing Mr. Marvin on his walks and at times jogs through the Ashford Park neighborhood. He was such a sweet man and he would always bring my trash can up from the street for me. Please know how much our entire neighborhood will miss seeing him!

Mr. Loyd was a true southern gentleman. Always had a kind word and smile. We love to chat with him on his runs - and then walks through Ashford Park. True example of a life well lived. John & Cheryl Warbington

I was blessed to have known Marvin for almost thirty years. Marvin was one of my most cherished friends, always there to share stories and to laugh together. I always considered him my guardian angel on Earth. I have no doubt he is continuing that role from Heaven.
With much love to his wonderful family, KC

Marvin will be greatly missed by many family and friends. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family for their loss. We are honored and thankful to call Marvin and his beloved family our friends. Marvin's visits to our home on his daily walks through Ashford Park were the highlight of our day. Marvin took great interest in his friends in our neighborhood and never forgot a name or story. He was a gifted listener and taught me the importance and reward of taking the time to stop and fellowship with others. He also modeled quiet service and acts of kindness everyday. Our sons learned many valuable lessons about service and friendship through his example. God's light and love shone through him everyday. Our family will honor Marvin and his memory by showing God's love to our neighbors.
