Michael LANCASTER Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LANCASTER, Michael Lawrenceville, GA- Michael D. Lancaster, 55, of Lawrenceville, GA and Midlothian, VA passed away on June 12, 2013 at Henrico Doctor's Hospital in Richmond, VA after a long illness. Mike was born February 2, 1958 in Panama City, FL. He was the son of Barbara Helderman-Tardiff and Maxie D. Lancaster. Mike's early years were spent in Spain, California, and New Hampshire. He attended Keene State College, NH and graduated in 1979 from Perimeter College in Atlanta, GA with an Associate Degree in electronic engineering. Electronics were Mike's passion and the focus of his life. He was employed by Fisher Scientific as an in-house technician before entering the field of medical electronic technology with Roche Diagnostics and then cryosurgical products with CryoMedical Systems. He branched into electronic voice recognition with IntelliVoice prior to entering the field of diagnostic medical x-ray with Hologic. His most challenging position with ProVision Dental, where he traveled extensively worldwide to install and service their equipment, was ended unexpectedly in 2004 because of his illness. Mike's hobbies included radio control planes, scuba diving, and downhill skiing. He enjoyed cruises and traveled extensively. He was a movie buff, enjoyed reading, and was a diehard Atlanta Braves and Falcons fan. Mike loved nature and wildlife. He was devoted to his two beloved poodle companions, Dancer and Gilley. Mike was a thoughtful, loving, and generous person who, as his best friend Marc Konik once remarked, "Would give you the shirt off his back." He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Helderman-Tardiff of Chester, VA; and his father, Maxie D. Lancaster and his wife, Alice, of Pahrump, NV. Mike was predeceased by his step-father, Richard Tardiff; his maternal grandparents, James F. Helderman, and Harold and Mary Stokes Funderburk; and his paternal grandparents, Wallace and Carrie Gallman Lancaster. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 6th, 11:00am in Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church, Glenn Springs, SC, officiated by Reverend Dr. B. E. Pettit. Interment of the cremains will be in the church cemetery immediately following the service. The family will then receive friends in the Family Life Center. The Reverend Gordon Mapes III of Chester Presbyterian Church in Chester, VA will officiate at A Time of Remembrance to be held in Mike's memory for the residents of Morningside at Bellegrade, 2800 Polo Parkway, Midlothian, VA on Friday, July 12th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P O Box 279, Pauline, SC 29374; or to any Wildlife Conservation group or humane society. Now that your Mom and Daddy are with you along with my dear wife Geneva you should be rejoicing in that no pain or sadness should be there. Your Mom asked me to do her service. I did with her two freinds taking a moment for two to express some good words about her. Mark and Sheree were present along with the Glenn Springs Congregation. We miss you but know you are having a wonderful time.

My Dearest Friend, These seven years have passed by so fast and your heart will never be the same. There is always the ache knowing that a part of you is no longer here. Each year gets easier to handle, however, the pain is always there. You will feel the pain, but you always have the wonderful memories and times of laughter. You had a lot of good times with Mike. You need to cling tightly to these, they will get you through every time. You are like a sister to me and my heart aches for you. You know how well I do understand what you are experiencing. Love you Dearly.

I worked with Mike for many years at Roche Diagnostics and he was a great friend. We were on the cusp of computers becoming a home item and Mike was the original tech guy. He was very intelligent and everyone like him. His laugh was infectious. He loved animals and that always reflected in his personality. Mike will be missed!

Mike and I dated for two years and in that time I believe I could have opened a Hallmark shop with the number of cards he had given me. Even thou Mike and I had gone our separate ways in life; he will always be near and dear to my heart. Mike was a true gentleman; he was kind, thoughtful and so very charming. Barbara when you read this please know that you raised your handsome son right. Barbara you are a friend who has been through so much, I just want you to know how very special you are to me and to God. He never gives us more than we can handle. But I think it's good to have someone to share with and to laugh and cry with. In the mean time when you close your eyes at night, know I'll tuck you in and kiss you good night. God loves you and so do I.

My dear Barbara,
After your note arrived, I did a little digging and I found the news you wanted to share with me. My heart fell reading about Mike. Our time together all those years ago was delightful, fun and playful. Skiing and shared time with Mike, you and Dick are some of my fondest memories of our time in CT. Years have flown by and for me he is forever in his 30's with his very dry wit and welcoming smile. May God comfort you in his hands as you work through the passing of Mike. I know how close the two of you have always been and how your heart must break. with love and prayers, Jackie

Mike was a great and dear friend of mine. He accompanied me to my first Bruce Springsteen concert and we snorkeled with manatees in Crystal River, Florida. I met him when we both worked for Roche and it's hard to imagine a world without Mike Lancaster in it.

I worked with Mike at Trophy Radiology in Marietta from 1996-98. He was a wonderful person. He was always so kind and helpful to me.
One special memory was his joy when I made a carmel cake for him for his birthday at work. (Most employees had some form of chocolate and he didn't like chocolate.) He was delighted. He will be missed.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Mary and I send our condolences to the family. We enjoyed Mike's visit to Pahrump NV and the good dinners we used to have. My best memory of Mike is when Mary was celebrating her 50th birthday and we had to surprise her and keep it a secret. Mike, his Dad,and I did a good job and she was very surprised. It was a good time. God bless him and May his memory be Eternal.
