I am 94 years old. Harris was my baliff for Judge E.A. Wright in the State Court when still a law student. I loved him like my own son. Judge Wright and I were guests at his and Helen's wedding.
Harris loved his Lord and I look forward to meeting him soon for a long and happy reunion. Blessings to you, Helen.

I had the pleasure of meeting Judge Hines when my oldest son played football with Clay. I knew when I first met him and his beautiful wife that they were a special couple. Judge Hines was such a kind and friendly man. He always spoke to me and always had a smile and a funny story. I truly enjoyed sitting close to him at the ballgames. My heart absolutely breaks for his family. I'm sure their friends and our community will wrap them in as much love and comfort as we can. This will take a long time to even sink in. I will never understand why fine men like him are taken from us way too soon. I feel blessed to have known him and will continue to keep Mary Margaret, Hap, Miss Helen and all of his precious grandchildren and in-laws in my prayers.

When you look up compassion, loved his fellow man - regardless to status, kind heart and spirit, and a smile that could light up a room, there you will find a picture of Justice Hines.

My heart is heavy. This is a shock. I knew Justice Hines to be a kind, compassionate and merciful judge - to litigants and lawyers alike- beginning with my early days as a lawyer in his courtroom (when I needed all the mercy I could get - for my clients and for me). He was always a role model and an example of the best in professionalism and integrity. He always had a smile on his face. He will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathy to his beloved Helen and his entire family.

I worked for him for the last 4 years before his retirement. This job was God sent. As soon as we met, we had a special bond like no other. I'm heartbroken and devastated that he is gone. I keep waiting for my phone to ring and hear his voice say "Lady, how are you doing and how's the family?". He always told me that he loved me dearly before he hung up the phone, which I will truly cherish for the rest of my life. He was the BEST! There are no words that describe how wonderful this man was. Prayers for Ms. Helen, Mary Margaret & Clem, Hap & Kelly, and the grandchildren (whom he adored). Love to all. Anita & Wesley Harrison

My sympathy to Helen and family.
Harris played on the winning Grady High School basketball team with my brother Don Baxter.
Harris and my brother Jerry Baxter became Superior Court judges about the same time.
When I was 20 and Harris was 19 we worked a summer together as laborers for the Big Apple Supermarket, trucking, unloading and installing food freezers and mixing concrete. It was hard work,
but enjoyable to see Harris smiling face every morning. No matter how hard the work was Harris always had a humorous remark to lighten the load.
Decades later how proud I was to give a celebration dinner when Harris became, in his words, one of the Supremes.
I will always remember Harris.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting Judge Hines several years ago just after a Georgia football game in which his son, Hap, had participated as a placekicker. He was the consummate southern gentleman. The state and the local community has lost a treasure.

I was privileged to serve with him on the Justice for Children Committee and remember the manner of kindest and respect that was shown through his smile on each occasion. It was my pleasure to know him. I pray that he will be remembered for the love that he shared for children and the path that he walked to improve the lives of others.

I am shocked - I graduated from Henry Grady High School in 1961 with Harris. Such a tragedy!!
Beverly & Sandy Baugham
November 5, 2018
Sandy has known Harris for many years, as the Baughams went to Druid Hills Baptist Church, with the Hines.
After high school, Sandy went to Auburn and Army ROTC while Harris went to Emory and law school. They continues to see each other during holidays from school.
Sandy was sent to Vietnam in 1967, was wounded, and came to a hospital in Japan, were I was and army nurse. Harris was a grooms men at our wedding in Valley Forge, PA in March 1968. I hope I can include that picture.
After discharge from the Army Bev and Sandy settled in Marietta , and those saw the Hines occasionally.
We attended Harris and Helens wedding in Taladega, Ala - probably in 1969, Sandy being a groomsman.
While Harris was a Superior Court in Cobb, we saw each other less often , but in about 1991, our Daughter- Robin Baugham and now Hahn, worked for the Superior Court , first with Jury Administration, and later and later Appointing Counsel for Indigent Defense. We know how much a mentor he was to her in her first job.
All this time, we have know the fine qualities of Harris and Helen, and Mary Margaret and Hap , the kicker at Marietta HS and Georgia.
WE pray that Helen and the family will have strength during the period, and know that a fine human being and bright legal mind will have been lost, almost before they could enjoy his retirement
.
The state and Marietta will miss this fine gentleman.

To hear of the passing of Chief Justice Hines makes me sad. I worked for a small project that fell under the Georgia Supreme Court. On the occasions that I would have an audience with Justice Hines, he was always very kind and gracious. He was that way with everyone whether you were at the top of the totem pole or not. For someone like me, who was closer to the bottom, that makes an impression. Prayers to his wife and family. This is a great loss to the his community and the State of Georgia. He will be missed.

I was a football and baseball teammate at Grady High School. He was a talented athlete, unburdened by ego and conceit. .At one baseball game, the scorekeeper announced the next three batters up: ""Entrekin, Entrekin, and Hines." Our salty coach said, "Sounds like a law firm." I had no idea Harris did become a lawyer and a prominent one.

Judge Hines was blessed with the Lord's Spirit and wisdom in a "contested" adoption case many years ago that enabled us to gain the child God intended for us through an unwed mother. He was able to see and hear the facts (vs attempts) and take the appropriate legal steps to gain the truth that finalized this adoption. We have spoken highly of him for all these years. Our legal system needs more God-directed judges.
We remain,
Blessed parents of our second child!

I was in Henry Grady High School with Harris and he was without a doubt the nice's person in School.
He was also a very good athlete.
I would always go by and see him when I was in the Cobb court house years ago.
He would always take a minute to speak.
The State will miss him.

I will remember Justice Hines for his kindness, twinkly smile and appreciation for all those who work in child welfare in Georgia. It was always a treat to hear him speak at CLEs. He had a way of rekindling the passion for child welfare law practice.
