Patrick Swindall Obituary

Former Georgia congressman Pat Swindall, a Republican trailblazer in Georgia before his political career was derailed by a perjury conviction, has died at age 67.

Swindall died Wednesday, July 11, 2018. His former campaign manager and chief of staff, Robb Austin, confirmed his death Thursday to The Associated Press. No cause of death was given.

A Republican from Atlanta's eastern suburbs, Swindall served two terms in Congress from 1985 to 1989, at a time when Georgia's political landscape was dominated by Democrats.

Patrick Lynn Swindall was born in Gadsden, Ala., on Oct. 18, 1950, one of four children born to Nathan and June Swindall. Nathan Swindall operated the Atlanta Furniture Store at Butler and Decatur streets. Pat Swindall worked in the furniture store as a youngster and would later manage the business. In 1972, Swindall graduated from the University of Georgia, where he also earned his law degree in 1975. He was a graduate of Briarcliff High School in DeKalb County.

He is survived by his wife, seven children and several nieces, nephews and sons-in-law.

A visitation will be held Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Cromwell Brothers Funeral Home in Peachtree Corners. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2018, at the Vine Community Church in Cumming.

Pat was a great guy I knew him back in the 1980's and lost touch with after that when we moved. I pray for God's comfort for his family.

Patrick was always "There for Me" in crises when we, my family, needed advice or guidance. I often asked for Patrick's wisdom and opinion in many matters. We knew Patrick could Always be relied upon for his astounding knowledge and astute observational gifts.

Your presence in our lives, and those of countless others, will truly be missed. Your memory will be with us Always.

Pat Swindall was one of my few true friends at Briarcliff and I'm grieved to know that he has passed. In APR 1968, Pat and I dressed in our best suits, drove into downtown Atlanta and joined the crowds making their way to Margaret Mitchell's. Our goal was to attend the funeral (one of two in Atlanta) held for REV King. Both Pat and myself had held the REV King in our highest regard. We never got to the site because some in the crowd became threatening towards us. An old man emerged from the throng and led us back to our car and told us to go home, which we did. Only a couple of months later we were to graduate from BHS and we did not sustain our close friendship at UGA. I left Athens after just 5 months and after that exchanged only one or two correspondence with Pat. Although I lost tough with him, countless times have I shared the story about Pat and myself attempting to attend Dr. King's funeral. Along with Pat, Lou Buckner and Phil Denny were two others with whom I sometimes hung-out and did things teenage boys do. I was also among those Pat drew to the The Order of DeMolay. I felt wanted and included because of that and although I did not pursue affiliation with Free Masons, I was always grateful to Pat for having brought me into the group. I'm glad that Pat and some others of our class maintained their friendships throughout life. Pat's long marriage, his fine family, his accomplishments and the affection his high school classmates have had for him, testify that he lived admirably, with dignity and sincerity. I'm blessed to have known him.

I've known Pat Swindall since the 7th grade at Kittredge Elementary in Atlanta, GA. Even at that point Pat was always the epitome of "The Big Picture" guy.

He called me last Tuesday night. Our 50th High School reunion is this year, but he was calling about a Demolay reunion. Pat got a hand full of us to join when we were in the 10th grade. We talked about that, I asked him about what his thoughts were on the political stage right now (very interesting), and we talked about our upcoming high school reunion.

He thanked those of us on the reunion committee and I told him our greatest reward was to have phone conversations with our old friends (as we were doing) before the reunion. I had no idea of the significance of that call at the time.
I am so grateful to spoken to him before he passed that night.

Pat touched a lot of lives and I'm equally grateful to have been one of them. God Bless you Patrick L. Swindall. Till we meet again!

I taught Pat at Briarcliff High School when he was an Eighth Grader, 10th Grader, Junior and Senior. He was a delightful student and bright as a new Penny! He was the baby in a family of very bright young people and as smart as he could be. He was a wonderful example of what a Christian family would want to stand beside. He was not perfect, but he was faithful. He was one of those kids who makes his parents proud. He has proven by his life that a man who is faithful is a blessing to all who knew him. He will be missed.Miss Spencer (Anne S Williamson)

I am sad beyond words at the passing of Pat. Back in the mid 80's, my ex husband died in his home country of Jordan. A friend of our family was an acquaintance of Pat. Pat and his office contacted Jordan. I was sent the death certificate and was able to draw death benefits for my young daughter. We needed them so desperately and I will always be grateful for Pat's help. Will be looking for him in Heaven to thank him again.

My condolences to Pat's family in their hour of loss.

Pat and I were close friends in high school and roommates at Georgia. I always admired his immense abilities and charisma and highly valued his friendship. I am truly distressed at his passing and feel as if a part of me has gone with him. Our only solace is the promise that we will be with him again in paradise.
