Robert ASH Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

ASH, Robert, Sr. ROBERT L. ASH, SR. Mr. Robert L. Ash, Sr. age 90 of Smyrna, passed away Monday, November 12th. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 16th at Smyrna First Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Kimmel and Rev. Chuck Allen officiating. Interment will be in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta. Cobb County lost one of its most respected educators with his passing. He was born in Telfair County on December 6, 1921 and died suddenly of cardiac arrest on November 12, 2012. Mr. Ash began his career in education after serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Lawrenceville High School and after one year came to Fitzhugh Lee High School in 1947. He was there as teacher and basketball/baseball coach until the opening of Campbell High School where he assumed the same duties along with that of assistant principal in 1952. He was a successful coach taking numerous girls and boys teams to region championships and state tournaments. In 1954 Mr. Ash moved to Monroe, GA becoming principal of Monroe Area High School. He served there for 11 years and then came back to Cobb County as Principal of Campbell High School in 1965. His career in education spanned 43 years, 33 of which were as a high school principal. Mr. Ash was recognized as Principal of the Year in 1987 by the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders. He retired in 1987. One of his proudest accomplishments was seeing the success of students who came through his schools and being a mentor to many educational professionals. Mr. Ash was proud of his career in education, but his greatest love was his church and family. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Smyrna and spoke often of his love for their music programs and his Sunday School involvement. He was especially fond of participating in the Men's Prayer Group each week. He loved his family and was dedicated to his wife of 67 years, Carolyn Lord Ash, who preceded him in death in 2011. Mr. Ash took special joy in family gatherings at which he always took time to bring comments of faith and inspiration. A long time resident of Smyrna, Mr. Ash was the son of Mr. & Mrs. A. W. Ash of Jefferson. Robert L. Ash, Sr. is survived by son Robert L. Ash Jr. and wife Lynn, daughter Karen Frost and husband Eddie, grandchildren Laurie Beard (Brett) Julie Wilkie (Wes), Andrew Ash, Emily Bodden (Scott) Lindsey Mitchell (Bradford), Hannah Frost, great grandchildren, Bryson and Ashlyn Beard, Max Wilkie, Sawyer Bodden and Betsy Mitchell, sister Jean Gruhn of Gainesville, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Thursday, November 15th at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna (770)435-4467.

Uncle Bob and my daddy were brothers and best friends. I will never forget the entertaining stories of them growing up together.
They always made me laugh and smile. Uncle Bob was a very
special man who touched many lives.
When I moved to Atlanta, I know he was instrumental in helping
me get a teaching job in Cobb County. For this I will be forever
grateful.
Bobby and Karen have lost a wonderful father. The legacy he is leaving them is one to be cherished.
My prayers are with Bobby, Karen and the rest of their
families.
Much Love,

Mr. Ash was my principal when I started first grade at Fitzhugh Lee in 1951 and then my uncle Carlos had him as principal at Campbell for the first graduation in 1952. I was one of the mascots for that graduation. I remember him better from later years when he attended my church, Fellowship Baptist, and when my brother, Dennis Fountain, had him as principal in high school. He always seemed very pleasant. He was a good man and from what I saw, he set a very good example in his personal life and was well respected in the community. I know he touched a lot of lives, especially young people, and will be missed by many.

Mr. Ash was a good man and a truly fine principal. Our class (1968) always seemed to collectively appreciate the role he played in our lives and his continued interest in our welfare many years after his official capacity was concluded. Visiting with him years later he gave you the sense that you were his favorite class without actually saying it. We felt appreciated and loved and for that we thank you.
