Robert Lanford Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LANFORD, Robert, Sr. The Reverend Mr. Robert Almand Lanford, Sr. passed away December 30, 2009 at his home, 'Tuesday Morrow', in Dahlonega. Son of Laudis A. and Lucile Almand Lanford, Bob was born in Stone Mountain, GA in 1934. A graduate of Stone Mountain High School, he attended Emory University. He was employed as a civil engineer with the City of Atlanta Water Department from 1954 - 1964. Answering the call to Christian ministry in 1964, he attended Candler School of Theology and was ordained a United Methodist minister after graduation. The churches in the North Georgia Conference that he served include Lawrenceville First, the Harmony Grove, Midway, and Auburn circuit, Gordon's Chapel, Rockmart First, Camp Glisson Conference Youth camp, Bethany in Smyrna, Kennesaw, and Mt. Pleasant in Cleveland. While at Candler School of Theology, he was the tenor soloist at Glenn Memorial UMC and a member of the Candler Choraliers Singing Ensemble. During his seminary years, he worked as a photographer with the DeKalb Tribune. Many people will remember Bob's beautiful tenor voice, his love of music, and his great pride that all of his children make music. His appointment to Camp Glisson was a highlight in his life because it offered him a chance to combine his love of the outdoors and his skills for camping with his deep conviction that the camping experience should be an extension of the local church and an opportunity for Christian education in the great outdoors. His retirement since 1996 was spent serving Mt. Pleasant UMC in Cleveland, Georgia where a new fellowship hall/educational building has just been completed. Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Mary Barton Jordan Lanford of Stone Mountain; his children, Rob and Patti Lanford, Lecia and Richard Landolt, Norby and Donna Lanford, and Nan Lanford; and his six grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to your favorite place of need. Several of Bob's favorites are Camp Glisson, The United Methodist Central Conference Pension Initiative, and Smile Train. Memorial services for Rev. Lanford are scheduled for 3:00 PM, Saturday, January 2, 2010 from the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall with Dr. Rev. Gerald Thurman and Rev. Ross Wheeler officiating. Funeral services will be held 3PM, Sunday, January 3, 2010 from Kennesaw United Methodist Church with Rev. C.R. Hill, Dr. Wallace Wheeles and Mike Sheron officiating. Interment will follow in the Stone Mountain Confederate Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.alexander-funeral. com. Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland (706)865-1500

Mary and family, I want you to know how much you and Preacher Bob have meant in my life. Both of you have been a tremendous inspiration to me in times of turmoil and hardship. I looked to Preacher Bob as if he were my own father. He is the best man I have ever known, with the exception of my Daddy, of course.

I will cherish the purple hymnal you two gave me forever as well as the kind words you both wrote in it. You have helped me so much and there is no way to express how much I loved him and still love you, Mary.

You mean the world to me and mama.

Love,

Just wanted you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers. We have so many good memories when all our families were together. Mama and daddy always loved to hear you and Robert sing, now they can hear it everyday! What a joy!

Lots of love,
Melanie and Vannette

We learned of Bob's passing too late to participate in his memorial services. We have many memories - Gordon's Chapel, Camp Glisson, Junaluska, the Houseparties, etc. Our memories certainly include Mary and Rob. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Love and peace,
Paul and Sylvia Hanna

I remember expressing an interest to Uncle Bob's mother (who I attended church with for many years in Stone Mtn) in working at Camp Glisson as a counselor. Just a couple of days later Uncle Bob called me at home - "Mama says you wanna be a counselor this summer...I'll send you the application and the form you'll need to take to a dr. for a physical" I said "Don't you want to interview me?" He said "No need..you've already passed the 'mama test.' " We had a laugh and I spent the summer of my life working at Glisson. I will always regret that personal circumstances (my own father's illness) kept me from working at Glisson anymore after that. Uncle Bob and the Lanford family are the type folks you run across once in a lifetime. I'm glad I had the opportunity and now mourn your loss with you..although I feel guilty talking about mourning, when I know there was quite a reunion when Uncle Bob and "Mama" were back in each other's presence!

I knew that Rev. Lanford had been battling kidney cancer for some time. After reading about him in today's AJC, I wanted to extend my condolences to his family & friends. His impact & ministry will be felt by many for a long time.

It has been years since I had the pleasure of speaking with Rev. Lanford and that is my loss but I can't even begin to count the number of times that I have thought of him. I was a child attending Camp Glisson year after year and "Uncle Bob" as he was known to everyone was a major contributor to that experience. He obviously meant so much to so many people and for me, it was the Glisson experience with Uncle Bob that I will always treasure. He truly had an impact on countless lives.
