On behalf of my family and in particular my parents who were teenagers living in Japanese occupied China, our sympathy and respect to the family of 1Lt. Robert E. Oxford. If not for those willing who made such great sacrifice for our nation and for the people they liberated in China and elsewhere, the world would have been enslaved.

I have the great honor and privilege to serve in the care of one of the last 14th Air Force pilots still surviving. One of the last cogent things my father was able to ask me before he lost his memory entirely, was whether I was still caring for the "Flying Tiger". It was of immense importance and grateful satisfaction to him that his son was caring for a 14th Air Force man; one who's 1944 raid over Shanghai he eye witnessed as a fifteen year old.

To the Chinese who are able to recall or have knowledge of the war, the liberators of their nation will not be forgotten. To their Chinese-American descendants living as free citizens of this republic, opportunities to honor the liberators are a blessing and a reminder of the debt of gratitude we owe.

We who are so blessed to live in these United States, most of whom have never known personally of war, can seldom fathom the meaning of living under foreign military occupation. The Chinese-Americans who recently paid tribute to Robert Oxford and his family in Concord, were aware of the eight years of destruction and subjugation meted out by the Japanese militarists. We all have the solemn duty to preserve the meaning of the great sacrifice made by 1Lt. Robert Oxford.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. -John 15:13 (KJV)

I send my respect and am thankful they have closure and able to bury him now with honors.
I am searching for more information on the other 7 men. My grandpa J.L. Bankhead (James Leighton) was a navigator that also went down over NE India during that year. I have seen the pics of the squadron and it certainly looks like my grandpa is in the pics. He was a navigator and also went down over Northeast India. My mom is the only immediate family still living so any further information is greatly appreciated.

How wonderful that Eugene's remains are finally home. We cannot be reminded enough of all that some have given for our freedoms. I am sorry that Susan did not live to see this. She followed with great interest your information on the locating of the downed plane and your endeavors to find Eugene's remains.
Susan's stepdaughter,
