Susan Higgins Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

HIGGINS, Susan SUSAN RIDDLE HIGGINS Susan Riddle Higgins, age 47, passed away August 31, 2008, at her home in Milton, Ga. She was born in Asheville, NC, the daughter of Drs. Winston and Merrell Riddle, but lived most of her life in the Atlanta area with her husband, Doug, and their two children. Susan met her future husband while in high school, and they were married shortly after college. They recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University (NC), majoring in accounting. A whiz as a student, Susan passed all sections of the CPA exam on her first attempt while a college senior. Following their move to Atlanta, she worked as a tax consultant then ventured into the corporate world. She served several years as a CFO for a firm doing international business in the 1990s, and she traveled to Central America on their behalf. Later, she became a financial contractor for The North Highland Group in Atlanta. For several years, she operated her own company, Blue Wave Consulting, an umbrella for several projects important to her. She also helped others establish small businesses. She was very interested in and participated in her children's activities, most recently her daughter's Girl Scout troop. Susan found great reward in helping others. She was a community-minded individual as she taught her children the value of giving through her generosity to and compassion for others. She was involved in children's centers and a family-formed foundation devoted to assisting Appalachian artisans reaching the Atlanta market with their hand-made goods. Susan was enthusiastic in her hobbies of tennis and gardening as well and managed to run and walk in several Susan G. Komen for the Cure events over the years. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Doug Higgins; one son, Matt; one daughter Ashley Suzanne; three brothers, Alan Riddle of Bryson City, NC; Bob Riddle of Old Fort, NC and Mike Riddle and wife Robin of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are one uncle, Doug Jenkins and wife Frances of Old Fort, NC; two aunts; Betty Ann Lindley and husband Clark of Old Fort, NC, Judy Camp and husband Ron of Spartanburg, SC; two nephews Jamie Riddle and Justin Riddle; two nieces, Jodi Ford and husband Steve, Katelyn Riddle, numerous cousins and her in-laws, James and Barbara Higgins of Marion, N.C. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, September 4, 2008, at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, 13560 Cogburn Road, Alpharetta, at 5:00 pm with a reception following the service in the church fellowshiphall. Memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen for a Cure. Arrangements by Cremation Society of the SOUTH in Marietta 770-420-5557
