Sylvia Eizenstat Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Longtime Atlanta resident Sylvia Eizenstat died on Thursday, April 5, at the age of 93 at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was the mother of Stuart Eizenstat, chief domestic adviser in the White House of President Jimmy Carter and a senior official in the Clinton Administration. She had been the longest serving docent at the Carter Presidential Center, greeting thousands of people for 15 years, from the opening of the Center to shortly before she moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Sylvia Eizenstat was a leader of numerous Atlanta Jewish organizations, including Na'Amat (formerly Pioneer Women) and founded the Minyonaires group at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue, the congregation to which she belonged for over 60 years. She received numerous awards, including the Israel Bonds Leadership Award and the award from President Carter for her service to the Carter Center. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and was unstinting in her love and care for her extended family. Her radiance and sweetness endeared her to everyone she met. She was born in 1914 in Chicago, the daughter of Eastern European immigrants, and moved to Atlanta after marrying Atlanta native Leo Eizenstat in 1942, while he was in the U.S. Army during World War II. She quickly became active in a myriad of civic and religious organizations. She was buried on Friday, April 6, at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends and family may visit her relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Minsk, from 10am to 12:30pm on Sunday April 8, 1150 Coronet Court, Atlanta. Sign online guest book: www.edressler.com. She is survived by her son Stuart, her daughter-in-law Fran, her grandsons Jay and Brian and their wives, Jessica and Erin, and by her five great-grandchildren, Menachem, Bracha, Eliezer Kalmon, Michal, and Julia Mae. Her husband, Leo Eizenstat, an Atlanta native and graduate of Boys High School, died in 1986. Contributions may be made to the Eizenstat Memorial Lecture Fund, Ahavath Achim Synagogue, 600 Peachtree Battle Ave, Atlanta, GA 30327. Arrangements by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, 770-451-4999.
