Tom Moreland Obituary
The Georgia Department of Transportation confirmed Moreland's death and said his "impact on transportation in Georgia is immeasurable."
Moreland spent more than 30 years at GDOT, rising to chief engineer before serving as commissioner from 1975 to 1987. He oversaw some of the state's largest transportation projects, including the current version of Atlanta's Downtown Connector.
After retiring from GDOT, he founded the Moreland Altobelli Associates civil engineering firm. It grew to more than 300 employees before it was acquired by another firm in 2017. It's now known as Atlas.

Tom Moreland was my first boss in state government and taught me many valuable life and career lessons. I counted him as a mentor and friend, and am saddened at his passing. He was a visionary but also a tough negotiator and savvy leader at a time of growth and change in our state. His public service had a positive impact on Georgia that will last longer than any of us, and that in itself is a fitting tribute. My condolences to the Moreland family. I share your sadness and fond memories of an amazingly intelligent man who's life made a real impact on our world.

It was always a pleasure working with commissioner Moreland on transportation projects , both while as a SAAG for DOT and then when he was in private practice with MA on local transportation projects.
