Victor Profis Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

PROFIS, Victor VICTOR PROFIS Victor Profis, age 58, of Atlanta, died July 6, 2009 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Deena; two daughters, Michelle and Lauren; parents, Gerald and Dory Profis; sister and brother-in-law, Loli and Joel Gross, all of Atlanta. His mother and father-in-law, Alan and Marilyn Henry of St. Petersburg, Florida and brothers and sisters in-laws, Gary and Nancy Henry of Herndon, Virginia and Kevin and Judy Henry of Ft. Myers Florida and several nieces and nephews. Victor lived a full, vibrant life that was an inspiration to his family and friends. He was born in Israel in 1951 and spent his childhood there and in Cuba before moving to Atlanta at age 14. After graduating from Briarcliff High School, he earned his bachelor and master's degrees in journalism at The University of Georgia. Victor's education prepared him for a remarkable career in publishing, which began in his adopted hometown, first at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and then Atlanta magazine. In 1983, he joined Southern Living magazine, where for the past 26 years he held a variety of positions, most recently Travel and Tourism Director. Throughout his career at Southern Living, he was a key leader in building one of the most successful magazines in America. His energy, creativity, and genuine warmth made him one of the most respected and beloved leaders in the Southern travel industry. He treated his colleagues like family, and they considered him a dear and trusted friend. He served on the boards of the Southeast Tourism Society and the Association of Travel Marketing Executives. Victor was a gift to his family, his friends, and the countless people whose lives he touched. He will be missed and he will be remembered always. Funeral services will be held today, July 7 at 2:00 pm at Temple Emanu-El with Rabbi Scott Colbert officiating. Arrangements will be handled by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta, 770-451-4999. Friends and family may sign an online guest book at www.edressler.com. To The Profis Family

My deepest sympathy goes out to you. I worked with Vic at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was a peer of his in the Travel industry. Vic and I were in the same Travel circle, with him representing Atlanta Magazine and Southern Living, while I represented the AJC. We always enjoyed sharing information and catching up with each other on career changes and our mutual friends. I will miss Vic's great attitude, vast intelligence and kind heart.

My thoughts are with you, Deena. Your courage and support gave him strength. What an inspiration you are to us. May your days be filled with memories that bring a smile to your face and peace to your heart. See you soon! Candace at GG&S

Victor and I met when we both worked for CCI and Atlanta Magazine. After that we both worked in the same industry and I would see Victor at many functions. He was always a friend to everyone - ready to help and listen. I will mostly miss his smile. Victor would light up a room when he entered into it and you would never forget him after that. Heaven is lucky to have him.

God bless his family.

As high schoolers we never know what greatness may lie ahead in the lives of our friends and their siblings. Sounds like Victor accomplished so much. Being a former English teacher and journalism minor, I can so appreciate Victor's contributions, but being brother, father, son and husband are the areas where I know he will be most missed. Loli, my heart goes out to you as I know how much I cherish my brother and his family and how much he would be missed if we lost him so prematurely. Know that I hold you and your family close in my thoughts. Helen Vaughn Marshall

I grew up in the neighborhood with Loli and Vic, knew them both at Briarcliff HS and then Vic and I were both in the J-School at UGA. Vic always had that big smile and was interested in everything. I admired his long career in magazines, and was proud whenever I read how well he was doing. Profis family, I'm thinking of you at this sad time.

Deena and Family,

My wife Sharron and I knew Victor through his association with Georgia Magazine’s advisory board, which he served on during my tenure as editor. He was the kind of likable, intelligent, and interesting guy that people take to immediately. His commitment to helping GM be the best it could be was obviously a metaphor for what he did for Southern Living and for his family. We’ll miss him too.
