Andrew F. Verdin

Private services were held July 9, 2006 for Andrew Fields Verdin, who died June 28, 2006 at his home in Colfax. He was 69.
Mr. Verdin was born January 3, 1937, in Toledo, Ohio to Andrew F. Verdin and Jean Myers Verdin. He grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Rocky River, where he graduated high school in 1955. He attended Ohio State University and was a member of Beta Theta Pi before his family moved to California. Mr. Verdin graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a bachelor's degree in social sciences and then entered the U.S. Coast Guard. He was on active duty for three years and served aboard the USCGC Klamath. He also served in the reserves and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant commander.
Mr. Verdin received a teaching credential from UC Santa Barbara and taught eighth grade social studies and woodshop at Redwood School in Crescent City before enrolling at Humboldt State University. He earned a master's degree in psychology and a credential in school psychology and worked for 20 years as a school psychologist with the Vallejo City Unified School District. He moved his family to Grass Valley in 1976 and remained there until moving to Colfax in 2000.
Mr. Verdin was an expert woodworker and had a number of other interests, including American history, politics, railroads, canoeing, motorcycles and exploring out-of-the-way hamlets in Northern California.
He was a member of Placer Hills United Methodist Church in Meadow Vista.
Mr. Verdin is survived by his wife, Sara Robertson Verdin of Colfax; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Bruce Gauthier of Chicago Park and their children, Nicolas, Megan and Scott; son Tom Verdin and daughter-in-law Joanna Corman of Sacramento; son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Christina Verdin of Folsom; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and James Conway of San Rafael and their children, Sarah and Jackson. He also is survived by his sisters Ginger Beebe of Summerland, Calif., and Marylou Falzone of Santa Barbara; and his former wife, Elizabeth Verdin of Grass Valley.
