SKANEATELES | Herbert "Herby" Kopp Jr., 70, of Skaneateles and Auburn, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 19, 2015.
Born and raised in Skaneateles, Herby attended Skaneateles School and later was one of the first students at Mary Delaney's" special needs" Work Shop, then Seneca-Cayuga ARC in Auburn. This is where he learned the skill of chair caning, in which he took much pride. Herby was well-known for riding his 3-wheel bike and peddling boxes to the former Skaneateles Bakery and Doug's Fish Fry so people could carry out their orders. He enjoyed riding in the fire truck for the Labor Day parade and trying his luck at the cake booth. He was well-known by the local merchants and enjoyed shopping at Roland's, McLaughlin's Department Store and True Value Hardware Store and Johnny Angel's Restaurant. Herby was a cheerful, caring person with a good sense of humor who ran errands for the local businesses. He always took pride in the things he accomplished.
For the past 10 years, Herby has been a resident of Northbrook Heights. The family is grateful to the Skaneateles community for all of their support, especially when they collected funds to purchase Herby an electric bicycle.
Herby is survived by a brother, David (Dorothy); two sisters, Ann (Ron) Wolicki and Barb (Charlie) Hunt.
Herby was predeceased by his parents, Ann and Herbert Kopp.
Services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Skaneateles. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home on Monday, March 23, from 4 to 7 p.m.
