James "Rick" Richardson
1935 - 2023
MORAVIA - James "Rick" Richardson, passed away peacefully in Moravia, NY, at the age of 88.
Rick is survived by his daughter, Celeste (Carmichael); son-in-law, Jeff; and grandchildren: Anna, Cara and Jeffrey. Rick was previously deceased by his wife, Margaret "Peggy", infant son, Billy, parents and a brother, Bill.
Rick was born on June 21, 1935 in New Straitsville, OH to Madge and James Richardson. He graduated from Barberton, Ohio High School and went into the Air Force as a linguists.
As part of his training, he studied Russian at Syracuse University, where he met his bride to be.
He married Margaret "Peggy" Madonna on June 10, 1961. After active duty the couple moved back to Syracuse, NY where Rick worked for Prestolite, Miller Brewery and Chrysler. He was active in labor unions and continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves in the 174th Division in Syracuse.
His family and friends remember him as a kind, funny, and happy man who encouraged all to have conversations and indulge in good food.
He was an active and devout member of Christ United Methodist Church of Locke and Moravia and often volunteered with the SCAT Van and at Northwoods Nursing Home. A dedicated supporter of his grandchildren and the arts, he could often be found at concerts, plays, and sporting events.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Rick's honor at Christ United Methodist Church of Locke and Moravia, 36 Church Street, on Saturday, January 6, 2024 with, 10:00-11:00 a.m. – visitation, 11:00-noon – service, and 12:00-1:00 p.m. – reception. All are welcome.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Assumption Cemetery in Lyncourt, NY.
Plans are emerging for a tribute to Rick's love of reading - which will include little free library kiosks around Moravia. Contributions are welcome and can be sent to Rick's daughter, Celeste, 174 N. Main St., Moravia, NY 13118.
Memorial contributions can also be directed to the SCAT Van program, the United Methodist Men at CUMC or Northwoods Nursing Home's Recreation Program.
