John Herbert Obituary

John Edward "Jack" Herbert Sr.

September 5, 2025

John Edward Herbert Sr., "Jack," 94, of Rockingham Rd., passed away with his family at his side, September 5, 2025 at Fingerlakes Center for Living. Born and raised in Auburn, NY he was the son of the late James B. and Helen Ronayne Hughes Herbert.

Throughout his life, Jack carried with him a deep passion for tradition, hard work and loyalty. From a very young age, Jack was guided by a deep and abiding Catholic faith and lived his life with integrity, kindness and devotion to his church and family.

Jack was a graduate of East High School and a proud 1954 graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he received his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration.

Following graduation, Jack joined his father and brother TR Herbert in the family owned furniture business, Herbert Brothers Furniture, until its closing in 1982. He continued his long and successful career as a furniture manufacturer's representative for various companies. With his warm personality, professionalism, and tireless work ethic, he built enduring relationships and earned great respect in the industry near and far.

Jack's lifelong devotion to his alma mater was evident as he reserved Fall Saturdays cheering for the Fighting Irish football. He was equally passionate about baseball, never missing the chance to root for his favorite team, the New York Yankees. He was a member of the Auburn Elks 474 for almost 70 years and a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Iris (Russell) Young; three sons: William (Sharon) Herbert, John (Debi Edwards) Herbert, and Patrick Herbert; grandchildren: Robert (Anna) Coly, Riley and Marissa Young, Corrigan (Sam) Benzkein, Sean (Marisa) Herbert, Kaitlin, Anna and Kyle Herbert; four great-grandchildren: Dorothy and Reeves Coly, Sophie and Maggie Herbert; daughter-in-law, Kathy Herbert and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Jahn) Herbert in 1988; a son James P. Herbert in 2018; two brothers, James Herbert and Thomas R. "TR" Herbert; a sister, Frances "Sis" Nangle; and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Herbert in 2022.

Friends are invited to visit the family from 10:00-11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church, 15 Clark St., Auburn on Wednesday, September 10th with a Mass to follow at 11:15 AM. The omission of flowers is requested, contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church and mail to 299 Clark St., Auburn, NY 13021 in Jack's memory. Oh Jack...Fritz and I were so sad to hear of your passing.
May God be with you all at this most difficult time and also with Jack,
Enjoy and Cherish your memories.
Remember his love for you and that will keep him close to your hearts.
Jack was a great friend to both of us and we loved playing cards with him when we had the opportunity to.
More so Fritz....
Jack and Dorothy are now back together again.
He will truly be missed by us both.
Rest in Peace Jack in your new life with Our Lord and Dorothy too...
