MCGRAW - Seth T. Powers, 93, of 3442 Route 11, passed away at home, Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, surrounded by his family. Mr. Powers was born Dec. 8, 1909, in Moravia, the son of Charles and Ida Rhodes Powers.
Mr. Powers had been a lifelong resident of the area and retired from Cornell University in 1974. At Cornell he had been a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades. For many years, he also had been an independent painter and paper hanger. Locally, he belonged to the Harmony Grange, the Homer Elks Lodge and the Cortland Moose. His memberships also included the New York State Trappers Association and National Trappers Association. In his spare time, Mr. Powers enjoyed fishing, trapping, camping, woodworking and repairing clocks.
Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Thelma Myers Powers; two sons, L. Thomas (Charlene) of Auburn and David (Sharon) of Cortland; three daughters, Joan (James ) Nadge of Homer, Susan Powers of Homer and Marsha (Victor) Havran of Cortland; two stepchildren, Raymond (Donna) Dodge of Marathon and Beatrice Sanford of Cortland; one brother, Warren Powers of Cortland; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mr. Powers was predeceased by his first wife, Muriel Alger Powers and his second wife, Helena Miller Powers.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland, with the Rev. Terry R. Major officiating. Interment will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery in Dresserville. Friends are invited to call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
