Addison Burt Obituary

WASHINGTON, Ga. - Mr. Addison M. Burt, of Washington, died December 30, 2004. Mr. Burt served his country in the United States Army from 1944-1946, he organized Burt Lumber Company in 1957. He was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church and was presently serving as Chairman of The Board of Trustees. He was a member of the C.S.R.A. Law Enforcement Officers' Association; the C.S.R.A. Planning and Development Committee; Director of Wilkes County Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the National Chamber of Commerce. As a City Councilman for 16 years, he served on the Bi-Racial Committee and Chairman of the Police Committee, was on the Board of Directors of The Community Fund; member of Rotary International; was a Free and Accepted Mason, York Rite Mason; a member of the Small Businessmen's Association, where he served on the Advisory Council; served as Executive Director of the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers' Association and also on the Grading and Standards Committee; served as Chairman of the Wilkes County Republican Party for 8 years and also served on the Wilkes County Industrial Development Committee. Honorary distinctions include the Community Award, Who's Who in Politics, Who's Who in the South and Southeast, 1972 Small Businessman of the year for Georgia; Board of Directors Farmers & Merchants Bank, in 1972; Named 'Boss of the Year' by the Jaycees; received the Jim Granade Community Service Award by the Washington Rotary Club for 1995-1996. Mr. Burt was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Duffy and Dinah Moore Burt and his brother, Clifford Dorsey Burt. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise Dunaway; two daughters, Lavenia B. Henderson and husband, Brian, Washington and P. Carol Burt, St. Simon's Island, Ga.; grandchildren, Addison Burt Goolsby and Lynn Scott Goolsby, Thomson, Barrington Wayne Goolsby and Cindy Jorgenson Goolsby, Washington; great grandchildren, Lindsey Goolsby, Burt Goolsby, Anna Goolsby and Maria Goolsby; step-granddaughters, Kimberly H. Collins, Wilkesboro, N.C., Karen H. Church and husband, Michael, Wilkesboro, N.C. and Kathleen Beck and husband, Matt, Orlando, Fla.; step-great-grandchildren, Kierstyn Collins, Zackery Church and Madelyn Church. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Resthaven Cemetery, Rev. Landon Carey, Rev. Kathy Lamon and Rev. Calvin Ward officiating. Tim Brown, Wade Dunnaway, Jesse Moore, Peyton McGill, Joe Berry and Dan Durham will serve as pallbearers. Joe Griffin, Ed Burdette, Jr., Gerald Norman, Pete Kopecky, Johnsie Berry, Employees and Former Employees of Burt Lumber Company and Members of LaFayette Lodge #23 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
