Nic was a native of Augusta, Georgia and was a longtime resident of Tallahassee. One of the original members and organizers of the Seminole Boosters, he enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest living booster at the time of his death. Nic proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Other survivors include his four sons; Victor (Mary), Mike (Vicky) and George (Mary Gordon), all of Tallahassee and Steve of Tampa; and ten grandchildren, Nic, Stacey, John, Janet, Nicholas, Elleni, Alexander, Augustus, Zachary and Nicholas. He is also survived by his sister, Kalliopi Panarites of Syracuse, NY. The family would like to acknowledge the care given to Nic by Cindy and Zoie Summerlin and Interim Health Care. Mr. Gavalas was a gentleman who raised his sons to be the same. It was always a pleasure to go into his store and be greated by him and later by his sons. He helped many of us learn to dress in a professional manner, and would work with us as we were coming of age, trying to build a professional wardrobe. He and his style will be missed.

Our condolences to Nic's family. We got to know Nic at Bruegger's Bagels; it was a joy to see his smiling face each morning. One of our coffee group, Valerie, brought her granddaughter, Abby, to coffee every day and Nic would buy Abby a big cookie. We know Nic enjoyed doing that as much as Abby enjoyed the cookie! After Bruegger's closed, we continued to see Nic at the Bagel Market & Bistro. We've lost a dear friend and will miss him very much.

Nic and Janet invited me to Easter dinner when I first came from Miami to Tallahassee for graduate school. Then they gave me a part-time job at Nic's Toggery to help me afford to stay in school. The kindness and goodwill that they displayed was a constant part of their everyday life. Nic was a friend, mentor, and spiritual Godfather to me and to so many others in our community. His memory will be always cherished.

I had the great privilege of being the first employee for Nic and Janet when they opened their store next to the old Seven Seas restaurant. They were wonderful to work for and were wonderful people and friends. Nic and Janet together touched the lives of so many and Nic will be greatly missed. I'm sure that God welcomed Nic with open arms. May God give Janet and the family His strength and love at this time.

Mrs. Gavalas, Vic, Mike George and Steve,
I will miss my visits into the store, whenever I was downtown, to see Mr. Gavalas. Some of my best memories of growing up in Tallahassee had to do with him and I hold him in the same high regard as I do my Dad.

Sincere Personal Regards,

I was so privileged to have the opportunity to know and provide medical care to Nic. He was a gentle loving soul with a smile that would melt your heart. One smile from Nic could make all the troubles of the day fall away. He had a way of making you feel like family, always welcoming with a hug and a kiss on your cheek. I was pleased to be a part of his life and he will forever be in my heart as the kindest man and loved by all that knew him.
