William Bates Obituary

WAYCROSS, Ga. - William Bowers Bates, Jr. M.D. passed away August 3, 2003 at University Hospital in Augusta. He was born in Danielsville, on April 27, 1921. He was graduated from Waycross High School in 1939, the University of Georgia in 1942 and the Medical College of Georgia in 1945. He married Gladys Chapman of Edgefield, South Carolina on June 12, 1945. He served as a captain in the United States Air Force in 1946 and 1947. Dr. Bates made his home in Waycross, Georgia. He dedicated 54 years of family practice to the care and welfare of the people of Ware County and beyond. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Waycross. He was a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Practice, medical director of Baptist Village for many years, and served on the board of directors of the Family YMCA in Waycross. Dr. Bates is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William B. Bates, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Chapman Bates, his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. William B. Bates, III of Augusta, his daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Harte of Aiken, South Carolina, and five grandchildren. There will be a visitation for friends at Music Funeral Home in Waycross, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2003. There will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church, Waycross, at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003. Burial will be private. Donations may be made the the First Baptist Church in Waycross.
