Alicia Burruel Obituary

Burruel, Alicia Abril
Abraham Lincoln said of his mother Nancy Hanks, "Everything I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." We borrow these words in tribute to our mother, Alicia Abril Burruel, who died early Friday morning, December 12, 2008. She was born in Miami, Arizona on May 29, 1931 to Pio and Leonila Abril. She married our father, Miguel, in 1950 and they were divorced 25 years later. She worked hard all her life, whether it was in the cotton fields, the laundry where she worked when young, or the 10 years she spent working as a diet clerk at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. She was the cleanest person we have ever known and was often teased that her gravestone would read, "She had a clean house". "My Mom" taught us many life lessons but most importantly, she taught us that taking care of your children was your primary responsibility and it came before anything and anyone else. She was plagued by serious illness for much of her adult life but she was always there to help us in any way she could. She was predeceased by her brother, Albert Abril and grandson, Adam Johnson. Alicia is survived by her four children, Mike Burruel, Jr., Lydia Burruel Johnson (Ross), Dr. Lori Burruel-Homa (Don), and Eddie Burruel (Cheryl), seven grandchildren, John Burruel, Alex and Maria Alicia Johnson, Christopher Homa, and Nicholas Cassandra, and Alaina Burruel, sisters, Dora Cabrales and Bertha Muñoz and her brothers John and Gustavo Abril and Jim Larriva. Mom, we love you. Be at peace. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M on Tuesday December 16th, 2008. followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road, Phoenix. Interment will fol
low at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th St., Phoenix, AZ. We want to thank her caregivers at Scottsdale Village Square for their tender regard. Memorials can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014-5699.
