Arthur Carroll Obituary

Arthur Armand Carroll Jr., age 78, died Thursday, March 23rd in Scottsdale Arizona. Arthur was born December 31st, 1927 to Arthur and Effie Carroll in Holmes, Mississippi. Arthur enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in May of 1951 and was accepted into Officers Candidate School in Quantico, VA. After graduation he was stationed in 29 Palms California as a 2nd Lieutenant. He ended his tour in 1955 when he retired as a Major. He continued his service in the 12th Marine Corp Reserve District from 1955 - 1964. Arthur graduated from Phoenix Union H.S. in 1945. He attended Phoenix College where he played basketball and they won the Junior College Championships. Arthur later attended the University of Arizona in the Boarder Conference where he was a letter man from 1949 - 1951. During his two seasons with the University of Arizona the team had a combined record of 50 - 11. Arthur was also Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) while at the University. During his Senior year at the UA, he married Miss Jacqueline Lee Crabtree on May 17th, 1952. Together they had two children: Arthur Guyland Carroll (deceased) and Michelle Carroll Ryan. Arthur went on to become an Assistant Coach at the University of Arizona under Head Coach Fred Inke from 1955 - 1957. After completing his Master's Education, he then went on to become the Assistant Principle at Marana High School where he was the head coach for both the Basketball and Track teams. Nearly every summer of Arthur's adult life, he worked for J.R. Norton & Company - which became the second largest privately held produce company in the US. From Yuma to Blythe and on to Barstow, he worked the packing sheds and whatever else was needed. The owner John Norton, pursued him and, finally in 1965, convinced him to leave the education field and join the company full time. While he was at the company he gained his pilot license and his love for flying as he logged over 5000 hours. When he retired from the company in 1989, he had become Vice President. Arthur served and belonged to the following associations: J.R Norton Company, Director; WGA - Director; Chandler - Cotton Ginning - Director; Salinas Cooling Co. - Director; Advisor to Arizona Cotton Growers Association; CA Iceberg Lettuce Associations (Chairman 4 years). Arthur was a man who would always help others in times of need and had the sense of humor to bring a smile to anyone's face. He enjoyed watching a great basketball game, a funny joke, and the company of his family and friends. Survived by: Two brothers Charles and Michael and two sisters Rena Erickson and Nancy White. Daughter Michelle Ryan Carroll. He also had two grandchildren Arthur Guyland Carroll, Jr. and Ryan Hart. Arthur you will be missed and loved by so many please rest in peace. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm, Wednesday, March 29th at Green Acres, 401 N. Hayden Rd, Scottsdale. Visitation one hour prior to services. Contributions in memory of Arthur may be made to "The University of Arizona Foundation," Campaign Arizona for the Student-Athlete, P.O. Box 210096, Tucson, Arizona 85721-0096.
