Cornelius Troup Obituary

Cornelius Vanderbilt Troup, Jr., 73, of Mesa, Arizona passed on September 28, 2005 He was the eldest son born to Dr. Cornelius Vanderbilt Troup and Mrs. Katye Murphy Troup in Brunswick, Georgia, March 23, 1932. He completed high school in Buffalo, New York,
earned a Bachelor of Music degree at West Virginia State College, Institute, West Virginia, received the degree of the Master of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music, Chicago, Illinois, and did further study at the University of Illinois, Urbana. His thirty-eight year career in the field of education was spent in Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, South Carolina, California, and Arizona. The latter years of Cornelius' employment were spent in the Phoenix Union High School District, where he taught band, choir, orchestra, guitar, and piano lab and served as Department Chairperson at South Mountain and Alhambra. Among the honors he received are: Clarinetist in the 1953 West Virginia All-College Orchestra; Guest Conductor of the South Carolina All-State High School Band; and 1991 inductee into the South Carolina State College Jazz Hall of Fame. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., College Band Directors' Association, National Education Association, Music Educators National Conference, Arizona Education Association, Arizona Choral Association, and Tanner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Troup is survived by Charlotte Flipper Troup, his wife of forty years; Cornelius V. Troup III, his son; Michelle Y. Troup, his daughter; Dr. Elliott V. Troup, his brother; and Barbara Fisher Troup, wife of the Late Kenneth W. Troup, his brother. Visitation will be held Friday, October 7, 2005 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 South Dobson Road, Mesa, Arizona. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 9:00 A.M., Tanner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 20 South Eighth Street, Phoenix, Arizona, with viewing at 8:30 A.M. Interment in Greenwood Memory Lawn, 2300 West Van Buren. The Rev. Dr. Benjamin N. Thomas, Sr. will officiate. Arrangements entrusted to Lakeshore Mortuary, Mesa, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Lung Association at 102 W. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85003
