Donald R. Larkin

Donald R. Larkin, 90, has gone home to join first wife Marion and son Donald A. on 11-12-03. Born in Jersey City, N.J., October 13, 1913, Don attained a law degree but was unable to use it when WW II called upon him to become a spotter pilot in Europe. He returned to become a pioneer in the early days of radio on the east coast. His career began playing piano on air for Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. This led to a career as an announcer that lasted for over 30 years. His program, The Hometown Frolic, opening each day with "Back in the Saddle Again", broke ground bringing never before heard Country Western music to the NY-NJ area in the 40's and 50's. His show was so popular that Elvis asked Don to promote one of his first recordings on the show. Don was a friend to many of the early CW
entertainers through his live concerts. Moving to PA in the 60's Don became a restaurateur while continuing to spin 45s. His move to Phoenix in 1972 brought a career change to real estate, some of his clients remembering Larkin Barkin from their childhood. In 1988, he married Peggy with whom he happily spent his remaining years. He is survived by Peggy, his daughter Lori Murphy, husband Kevin and granddaughter Kristen all of Phoenix, grandson Donald A. Larkin of Virginia, stepchildren Tom, John, Mark and Paul Fitzgerald, Mary Kennedy, and their families. Goodbye Little Darlin'.
