Dr. Rogers Obituary

Rogers, Dr. Charles Ronald
Dr. Charles Ronald Rogers, 76, of Tempe, AZ, was a remarkable man, kind, fun-loving, erudite yet unassuming, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, colleague, and friend. He passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015 surrounded in love by family. He was born on Nov. 20, 1939 in Mt. Sterling, KY to Charles Virgil and Lorena Bailey Rogers and raised in their hometown of Owingsville, and later Ashland, KY. He was the first person in his family to graduate from high school, immediately after which he served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne in Fayetteville, NC. He obtained an undergraduate degree at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, then attended medical school at the University of Kentucky, where he graduated with honors and was elected Alpha Omega Alpha in 1967. He completed an internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, and afterward became a family practitioner in Ashland, KY for 5 years. Returning to the University of Kentucky for further training, he completed a residency in anesthesia, and was certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in 1977. He practiced in Lexington and Ashland, KY, Salt Lake City, UT, and in the greater Phoenix area. Charles retired from anesthesia in 2004 at the age of 65 and began work in an entirely different medical field, phlebology, practicing at the Morrison Vein Institute, where he lectured to national and international audiences. He became its representative with the American Medical Association, being among the group to draft their first national board examination. At the age of 68, he passed the exam, and became board certified in his new specialty. He retired from medical practice in 2013. He was a seeker of knowledge, a zealous golfer, a bright light in this world, and will be profoundly missed. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Bonnie, his children, Leland (Juliana) Rogers of Richmond, VA, Gregory (Tara) Rogers of Sandy, UT, Steven (Molly) Rogers of Henderson, NV, Fred (Melissa) Rogers of Hurricane, UT, Julia Rogers of Mesa, AZ, LeGrand (Terreal) Rogers of Salt Lake City, UT, and Sarah Gubler of St. George, UT, each of whom he raised with his former wife, Chella Osborne. He is also survived by his step-children, Bryan Morris of Queen Creek, AZ, Michelle Williams of Strawberry, AZ, Juliann (Erik) Gustafson of Chandler, AZ, Kara (Brendan) Proffitt of San Diego, CA, 27 grandchildren, and his brother, Michael Rogers, of Columbia, SC. A private remembrance was held. Arrangements by National Cremation Society As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Valley.

I worked in surgery with Charlie Rogers for more than 15 years. He always brought his skill and humor to the OR. In my estimaton he was a superb anesthesiologist and a good friend. When in dire straits myself and needing coronary bypass surgery I specifically requested Charlie. I always felt that I literally owed him thanks for my life and will be in fact forever thankful.

Charles (Charlie) was not just a valued colleague, but a great friend and mentor to many. The enduring wisdom and grace along and the joy and peace he displayed during the remaining years of his life was an inspiration to me and many of his friends and family. He will remain in our memories and bring smiles to our faces for having had the privilege of his company for many years.
