Eugene Bernstein Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Bernstein

Eugene "Gene" Bernstein, 90 years old, passed away on January 6, 2021 in Tempe, Arizona. Gene was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, a first generation American, a first-generation college student who earned a degree in pharmacy, and a veteran. For many years, Gene worked as a pharmacist in the Chicago area, finishing his career at Great Lakes Naval Air Base, and resettling in retirement to Scottsdale, Arizona. Gene loved milkshakes and cupcakes, and he was a lifelong student of American history. After moving to Tempe, Gene discovered a talent for painting, and his creativity and resilience blossomed.

Gene was a loving husband to his late wife Sheila. They were married for almost sixty-two years until Sheila's passing in 2017. Gene is survived by his children, of whom he was very proud. In his brief struggle with Covid-19, Gene was lovingly cared for by Robin Tolliver, JoLee Schwarz, and the staff of Elmcroft of Tempe. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Aegis who provided palliative and hospice support for Gene. In sadness, there is gratitude as well.

I am not sure why I felt a need to look for Gene but so sad to see he just passed almost a year ago. I Was the Senior Enlisted Advisor at the Branch Medical Clinic where he worked as our Pharmacist and I loved working with him. He was always kind and funny. I served with him the last 5 years that NAS Glenview was open before BRAC shut the historic base down completely by Sep 1995. I have only fond memories of him and all the staff I proudly served along side of. My deepest condolences to his family, albeit late. HMC Susan Burnworth, USN, RET
