passed peacefully on April 12, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 91. Gladys is survived by her husband Dr. John J. Cavanaugh and her five children, Mary Richardson (David), Kevin Cavanaugh (Ingrid), Sean Cavanaugh (Maria), Colleen Cavanaugh and Julie Perman (Gary), six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born in Scottdale, PA, Gladys grew up and attended school in the Mt Pleasant, PA area. In 1944, Gladys enlisted in the Women's Army Corps where she served as an X-ray technologist and dental assistant. She distinguished herself receiving decorations, including the American Theatre Ribbon and WW II Victory. Gladys departed at the rank of Staff Sergeant. She later attended the University of Pennsylvania to become a dental hygienist. During her time in the military she met her husband John J Cavanaugh. They were married for 65 years and have lived in Arizona for the past 55 years. She was a devoted wife, dedicated mother and voracious reader. Visitation is 5-6pm followed by Rosary on Thursday, 4/21/16 at Messinger Mortuary 7601 E Indian School Rd, Scottsdale, AZ. On Friday, 4/22/16 at 1:30pm, a memorial service will be held at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Mausoleum Building, 2033 N. 48th St, Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers, please send donations, in her name, to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
