Grace Carlisle Obituary

Grace Viola Carlisle, 90, of Burton, AZ passed away in Gilbert, AZ on January 19, 2005. She was born October 19, 1914 in Daisy OK. Grace was very involved in the Burton Baptist Church, she enjoyed horseback riding, quilting and gardening, most of all she enjoyed her family and grandchildren and loved them all. Grace is survived by her son, Jason C. Carlisle Jr. of Wilcox, Jack D. Carlisle of Showlow; daughter Jerri J. Lindsey of Gilbert; sisters Jewel Reidhead of Roosevelt, Utah, Alice Malone of Showlow, Evelyn Blount of Chandler; brother Troy Williams of Alaska, Henry Williams and John Williams both of Burton. Grace was 4 years old when she came to Arizona in 1918, traveling by covered wagon from Oklahoma with her parents Henry Clay and Carrie Alice Williams pulled by 2 mules named Kit and Jen and accompanied by a dog named Shep, the trip took approximately 6 months with a family eventually landing in the small community of Burton, AZ located approximately 8 miles west of Showlow. Here they homesteaded 160 acres and raised their 14 children. Grace attended and later taught in a one room school house in Burton. Burton is where she met her husband Jason Cornelius Carlisle who was a cowboy at the time and they were married in 1931, raising 3 children and spending their 56 years of marriage farming and ranching in the Burton area. The 2 were founding members of Burton Baptist Church which is one of the oldest Southern Baptist churches in the state. The small church is still active today. She was preceded in death by her husband Jason C. Carlisle; parents Henry and Carrie Williams; one brother, Dick Williams. Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, January 29 at the First Baptist Church in Showlow with a visitation Friday evening from 6-8pm at Owens Mortuary in Showlow. Interment will be in the Burton Cemetery. Owens Mortuary of Showlow handeled the arrangements.
