Fernandez, Father Gustavo "Bud" S.J.
88 years old, left his time on this Earth on November 6, 2016. Bud was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona but at the time of his death, resided in Honduras Central America. After graduating from St. Mary's High School, he went on to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his time in the service, he attended college, receiving multiple degrees from Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, the University of San Francisco and a Master's degree in Theology from the University of Santa Clara. He spent 4 years teaching at Brophy College Preparatory High School, leading him to pursue his calling to become a Catholic priest and was ordained in the Jesuit order in 1967. The remainder of his life was spent serving and ministering to the people in cities and villages of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. He was a sincere man of God and his vow of service in missionary work was evident throughout his life. Bud was an intellect, an avid reader, quick witted, always kept current with events and happenings in the U.S., following news and especially his beloved Notre Dame football team and was very talented at drawing, amongst other things. He took long walks in the early morning for physical exercise up to the day of his death. Bud is preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Dionisio and Maria Fernandez. He is survived by his sister Carmen Scharbach and numerous nieces and nephews of 3 generations. His yearly visits back to the states will be deeply missed. A mass in celebration of his life will be held this Saturday, December 10, 2016 @ 10:00am in the chapel of Brophy College Preparatory 4701 N Central Ave Phoenix, AZ 85012.
