Hugh Hughes Obituary

Hugh "Ed" Hughes

Sun City - Hugh "Ed" Hughes, 97, of Sun City passed away peacefully Thursday, March 12th at the Royal Oaks Life Care Community. He was born August 30, 1923, in the mining town of Freeland, Pennsylvania, and graduated from high school there where he participated in school musicals and church choirs.

After high school graduation he enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served as a Navy radioman. Upon discharge from the Navy, he located to Manhattan, NY, where he attended the Julliard School of performing arts and was a performer in professional theater.

Desiring to travel, he joined the Western Electric/AT&T company and had an impressive career of 33 years working in the US, Canada, Greenland, Denmark, Norway, Nigeria and Vietnam. His last years with AT&T were in California which allowed him to fulfill his personal goal to finish his college education, earning a degree in political science in 1981 from San Jose State University, California.

After retirement in 1983, he moved to Sun City West, Arizona, and continued his travels biking and staying with Elderhostel throughout Europe. On his home front, he was an avid tennis player and hiker conquering the Grand Canyon 5 times and almost to the top of Mt. Rainier on one occasion.

Ed was a faithful attender and member of the American Lutheran Church in Sun City. A true gentleman in spirit and generous to all, his love for Pennsylvania always remained strong and he supported a number of children's programs in the Freeland area including establishing a college scholarship fund through the Luzerne Foundation in Pennsylvania.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his numerous friends and his generous gifting to the Royal Oaks Foundation.

His ashes will be interred in his family's plot at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Freeland.

Hello, my name is Lesley McDermott and I’m the Girl Scout leader from the White Haven/Freeland troop. Mr. Hughes was such a wonderful friend to the scouts and the girls truly thought of him as a loving friend. They enjoyed making cards for him and talked about him often. Mr Hughes most recent donation to scouts allowed them to visit NYC and see Wicked on Broadway. This is an experience that many of the scouts would never have been able to do without his generosity. He was such a genuine, wonderful generous person and will be missed by many here in PA.
