One evening dad and I were driving across phoenix, we hadn't seen each other for awhile and had an argument. There was an awkwardness in the air. He then asked me if he had ever told me the Ice cream story? No I said. He was stationed in Okinawa Japan and on Kp duty for one month. There was an older Japanese man who helped him clean up in the evenings. After awhile he noticed this man went through the rubbish when he was finished with work. He was retrieving anything edible and found some moldy oranges. Dad asked alarmed, why he was doing that and the man replied that there was a food shortage. He was trying to find what he could for his family. There had been a mistake and the food shipment to the kitchen had included 10, 5 gallon tubs of icecream, the man said if he had just one tub to sell he would be rich. Dad said in his way, well hell! Take some then, we don't need all that icecream. The man was too ashamed to take anything that was not thrown out. At the end of his month of KP Dad and some buddies took the tubs, cones and scoops to the park where people would socialize and started passing out icecream. They were there for hours and hundreds of people came until it was all gone. From then on anywhere Dad went in Okinawa they recognized him and called him the icecream man. I have a clear image of him in this story and I like to remember him this way for it sums up who he was; a warm, caring and generous person. It was often his downfall, trying to hard to give everything to all of us, in this he made some serious mistakes but always with the intention of doing what he could for his family and those he loved. I loved him very much and I'll miss him. JJ Devereaux-Hood

Dear Vicki and Clark, We were sad to read of your Dad's passing. The picture brought back good memories of him when we were all young and had good young family times together. We are thinking of you at this time.

Jake Hood was a magnetic and charming man who touched each person he knew in a different way. He will be so missed by everyone who knew him because people like him don't come along very often. He was truly special.
Love you Grandpa.
