James Cook Obituary

Cook, James E. (Jim)
James E. (Jim) Cook, author of ten books about Arizona, died January 10, 2012, at Wickenburg, Arizona, surrounded by family and friends. Cook always claimed Peoria, Arizona as his hometown, but he was actually born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. He graduated from Flagstaff High School in 1953, and received a bachelor's degree from Arizona State College at Flagstaff (now NAU) in 1958. Cook worked 32 years for the Arizona Republic. His happiest years were spent roaming the state, gathering articles for Arizona, the newspaper's rotogravure magazine. He also wrote many free lance magazine articles. In 1981, Cook received from NAU and the Associated Press the Robert R. Eunson Alumni Achievement Award in Journalism. In 2005, Cook and his brother, songwriter Dean Cook, were named Arizona Culturekeepers for their part in keeping alive the lore and history of Arizona. After retirement, he claimed the title of "Official Arizona State Liar" and founded the "Wickenburg Institute for Factual Diversity." His "Journal of Prevarication" found many readers on the Internet. Cook's tenth book, "Half a Sack of Cats," was published in 2011. It tells the story of Cook being dragged from pillar to post iin Arizona as it existed in the 1940's. He is survived by his wife, Eleanore Hartz-Cook; three children: Julie Wullkotte Burgit (Richard), Kenneth Cook (Joanne) and Kevin Cook; sister Wanda Martin and brother Dean Cook (Janet); six grandchildren: Jessica Collins (Christopher), Jennifer Wullkotte, Jacqueline Zawacky (P.B.), Seth Wullkotte and Chandler Cook; six great grandchildren: Liam, Iris, and Lelah Garrigan and Jazlyn, Jayla and Patrick Zawacky; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Ruby Cook of Yarnell, Arizona, and first wife, Jerry Trammell Cook. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 18, at Deer Valley Church, 15220 N. 39th Avenue (at Greenway), in Phoenix. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Friends of the Wickenburg Public Library, or the Wickenburg Humane Society.

Jim was one of the best writers I ever worked with. His love of Arizona and respect for his readers never wavered. It was an honor to know and work with him.

Jim Cook was one of my first editors when he was at Arizona magazine at The AZ Republic. His kindness, encouragement, and readiness with a compliment made every article I wrote for him a joy. Though it has been many years since that time, I've never forgotten how much he enriched my life and added to my love of writing.

I'm sure all those in heaven are now enjoying Jim's sense of humor and terrific storytelling.

I feel so honored that I was able to know him.

Jim reminded me of the first time we met the last time I visited with him. He came home for dinner with Guy West only to get sandwiches because Barbara, Jerry and I were going to the movie. He has a very special place in my heart. He was a great Uncle and called himself that to me. I have many memories to share with my cousins. Julie, Kenny and Kevin, I am sorry I will not be with you on Saturday but will be there in spirit. I loved him and love each of you. Come to visit anytime. I will meet you in Springerville..Pete

Jim taught me more about Arizona history than any number of books or TV shows or newspaper sections; I had the privilege to work with him for many years, and I miss his stories, tall tales or actual fact.

I always enjoyed chatting with Jim in the office when he was writing for the Features sections of The Arizona Republic and I was copy-editing some of his work. He always had a smile, a twinkle in his eye and a comment or story to make the day just a little more fun.

Jim was a fine man and a fine friend of mine for many years. May all his beloved ones, family and friends, know that he was widely admired for good reason. He will be easy for us to remember.

Although our encounters were infrequent, they were nonetheless genuine and sincere. Even though we never discussed it , I feel we shared many of the same values and feelings. Vaya con Dios, mi amigo!
