James Lanker Obituary

Lanker, James (Jim) Edward
80, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away on July 10, 2016, after bravely enduring a brief illness. In losing our "Papa", we lost a devoted husband, loving father, loyal grandfather and great-grandfather, skilled storyteller and proud patriarch. He was born on February 5, 1936, the only child of Florence and Ted Lanker, in Lima, Ohio. He attended high school in Sandusky, Ohio, and during his senior year, he began dating the love of his life, Patricia Diane Williams. Together, they went to Michigan State and were married 60 years ago. While at MSU, he earned a degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of the 1957 Big Ten Championship swim team. He was a life-long devoted Spartan. He launched his career in the automobile industry with General Motors, which would then take them on their journey to Arizona to oversee the proving grounds in 1965. Through the years, Jim successfully owned and managed 6 car dealerships in Arizona and California. He was a member and held many offices in Automobile Dealer Associations in both of these states. Through the years, Jim could be found enjoying his days golfing, traveling, boating, bicycling and sipping a toast at sunset. He was proud to have completed a 26-mile marathon. He is survived by his wife, Diane, three children...Glen Lanker and his wife, Linda, Greg Lanker and his wife, Jenny, and daughter, Anne Roberts and her husband, Jeff. Our "Papa" also leaves behind nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who will miss him eternally. We have carved you on the palm of our hands and will carry you with us forever in our hearts. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016, 16245 North 60th Street, Scottsdale, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Jim's great-grandson Blake, please consider a contribution to 'Down Syndrome Connection' www.dsconnectionsnw.org. or to "doctorswithoutborders.com".

It is an honor for me to be a part of Papa's family. I'll never forget his generosity and hospitality! He stopped at nothing when it came to taking care of his family. Like the time I mentioned I had a "slice" when using my driver. Before I knew it he had given me a book on golf, showed me two different golf videos on correcting my swing, and had taken me to the driving range to work on it. And for the first time in my life I didn't slice! It may seem small but it's one of my favorite examples of how he was fiercely dedicated to his family, even with me, an outsider. Papa, you will be missed.

When Papa walked into a room, everyone was instantly drawn to him. He just radiated this amazing sense of welcome. So generous. So kind. Always ready to command a room with his hilarious and animated stories. Papa was someone everyone wanted to be around. I'll never forget his boisterous laugh the kind that made you well up with joy at the sound of it.

He was notably successful in life. But what he seemed especially proud of was his family. Our recent reunion, multiple times, you'd hear him say, Can you believe all this, Nana? We started this, all those years ago. Who would've thought? 1 amazing, loyal, beautiful wife. 3 children. 9 grandchildren. 3 great grandchildren. What a legacy he has left behind. His investment of love and support to all of us will continue to be priceless, even as we figure out life without him. I will miss him greatly, and I treasure and will always cherish the sweet memories I have of my Papa.

I am so very grateful for having Jim Lanker as my Father. Looking back, I appreciate all the time he spent being there for his family, all that he taught us, the great memories and funny stories. His support and generosity were amazing. He was a great example of someone who worked hard and really cared about his family. I'll never forget the time spent fixing up boats with him and all the camping and fishing trips at the lake and how he was so supportive of everything we were involved in, even attending practices, not just games. He and my Mom, Diane were married for 60 years and it was a remarkable partnership. I was reminded of this being with them recently and seeing how deeply they loved and cared for each other. Jim Lanker is leaving a great legacy as a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather who is very much loved and missed. I am so looking forward to seeing him again in heaven.
Dad, I can't thank you enough.
Much Love Always,
Glen

I will always remember and be grateful for the time Papa spent with us... I was so proud to have him at rugby games and graduations. Thank you for teaching me how to fish and sing and giving us such a good example of a life well lived. Love you, Papi.
